Focal Elear and Utopia Review / Preview With Measurements - Head-Fi TV

Focal has been using beryllium in their mid tier and up speakers for decades.  No reports on the Home Theater and Stereo sites of beryllium poisoning reported to date.....

In all seriousness, Focal and others know how to construct beryllium transducers safely and have more than enough product history to demonstrate their ability to do so in a design model safe for the consumer.

That's very presumptuous of you.
Yes but what is the beryllium attached to will that breakdown first before the beryllium under hard use. Beryllium is used in car ignitions, cell phones and even dental equipment so there's usually another item that breaks down before the beryllium leaving the beryllium intact.
The EPA website"
For consumers, beryllium appears to pose no harm. Researchers said they are unaware of anyone contracting beryllium disease by handling a finished product, such as a dental equipment, sporting equipment, automobile parts, mobile devices or computers.

But for workers who machine, polish or alter beryllium in any way that creates dust or fumes, there are risks. Microscopic amounts of dust can cause disease—even for people not directly working with the metal, such as custodians, guards, company nurses and outside contract workers."

If you feel unsafe with beryllium don't buy it but that includes your car, computer, cell phone and many other products.

I have seen Be work harden and crack up close and personal. I would not discourage anyone from doing a little reading on the material. Putting current through it and having it vibrate at 20Khz or so may not be the brightest idea.

Current never flows through a drivers diaphragm, only its voice coil.

So absolutely user friendly that Formula One banned it's use outright.

They banned Be in F1 only because Mclaren was too dominant and only their Mercedes engines used Be. They won almost all races in 1998. It had nothing to do with safety as far as I remember. Just standard F1 politics and losing teams whining

So for those of you struggling with Be I'll give you this. After it is made into sheets the only other process is how it is stamped into shape. From that point on it lays in a chassis. The voice coil is copper that's where the heat lives. This generated heat isn't enough to cause or produce any gas. Now let's talk about the Be directly. Be again is only harmful in dust form. In dust form it's crystalin edge can cause internal bleeding in the lungs and other susceptible areas. With that said, Focal buys the product in SHEETS. At this point it is NO LONGER harmful. In this sheet form it can crack or shatter but the pieces are so large the only way they could harm you is if you deliberately decided to have them for breakfast, lunch or dinner ...possibly a snack. So for those of you that are daring enough to eat Be good luck, it could cause damage to your stomach. I'm not exactly sure how you could breath in the shards when it shatters. It's so large you would probably need to suck it in as though you were trying to smoke a pipe load of marijuana. That would be on you not the Be. It can't become a dangerous dust again unless this is done in a recycling plant. But as someone already pointed out Be is found in its most raw form in the air and all sorts or places ....so if you are concerned about Be, DON'T BREATH or EAT because it is also found in produce. Even worse, in some countries like South Africa it has been detected in water so what ever you do, DON'T DRINK WATER! As an FYI, it can't ever go back to a dust form again unless it is forced by deliberate process. Now please stop assuming. Unfounded conjecture, rediculous supposition just tells us that you haven't done your diligence and without a doubt need to open your mouth to deliver your scientific determinations only after you have the facts. Be in the way it's implemented by Focal is not dangerous unless you make it dangerous by reverting it back to a dust. It's very expensive to do this and so much less expensive to purchase and enjoy the high quality audio it can produce. Now, the horse died and this topic should be on you that are concerned for your health and safety beyond reason. I find these comments disruptive and without merit. I mean no disrespect unless you post these poorly researched determinations as trolls, in which case you have my full distain. If you can produce any evidence that Be can revert back to dust by introducing audio vibration, I'm happy to eat my words.

The Elear uses Focal's AL/MG based transducer, so you should live to tell us how you like them after you use them for a few days.

Hi,

Subject to Elear. Does anyone know if the grill can be taken off easily? The reason is the outside design is not 100% satisfy enough. It's still lacking some looks even though the Focal symbol is right there. I wish Focal should hire an Italian designer to initally spot check Focal design. It lacks the "spark " moment for me. Doing some spray paint or something to make it shine or YOU thing.
Utopia is as good looking design as it is and no more space left.
Good to know if someone could think of something.
