Denon AH-7200

Has anyone removed the pads? In the exploded diagrams I see 4 slots where it appears the pad would twist and lock, but I have tried turning the pads with a bit of force and they don't seem to want to move. Don't want to break anything.

Anymore reviews?

I received mine a few days ago and have been doing comparative listening sessions with my D7100. I really like the visceral bass slam of the D7100 on tracks such as Roundabout by Yes, and was missing that on the D7200. On the other other hand, the midrange clarity of the D7200 was a big step forward. Color differentiation and transients of percussion in particular are strong suits of the D7200.

Anyway, yesterday I decided to try compressing the D7200's cups closer to my ears since the seal of the pads didn't seem to be as tight as on the D7100. After noticing improved bass, I pumped the cups many times to try and loosen up the foam. I also shortened the headband stops (from 7 to 5) and moved the headband forward on my skull a bit. All of these changes improved the seal, brought the bass up more to where I wanted it and generally improved the imaging. My listening session with the D7200 last night was nothing short of glorious!

I want to do more comparison listening before posting a full review, but I believe these are the finest headphones Denon has yet produced, and a possible classic. The resolving power and top-to-bottom balance, as well as the ergonomics, are exceptional.

OK here is my notes of comparison between Denon 7200 and Fostex TH-900

- I am using TH-900 with lowten pads which make sound stage smaller than stock !

- TH-900 has larger sound stage and it is more V shaped .

- 7200 has more forward sound , no 500hz  dip , it put you at the 1st raw ,, the TH900 put you at 3ed raw .

- 7200 sound tune is more to the cold side ( like guitar ) ,, the TH-900 is more worm  (like Electric guitar).

- Sub- bass is little bit  more in the TH900 , more detailed bass ,, more texture ,,,,, but not huge defferance .

- Sound separation is good in both but the TH900 has more sense of the room.

- Details is better in 7200 because of better mids.

- Treble in both is almost the same ,, it git bit higher in TH-900 and it is more sparkly.

- 7200 is the better more refined TH-X00 , without the distortion or the boominess.

Both headphones are very good performers ,, choice is depending on personal taste,
for me i still like the TH-900 more ,, it sound more expensive , more euphonic , but still the 7200 is a keeper also
Male voice , Classic music is better for me on the 7200 ,, Female , Rock , Jaz , old music is better in the TH-900.

- Next comparison ,, will be with the Sony Z1R as requested ,, sorry for the delay ..

No twist for the Denon .. rings do detach but with force and could break ,, old mechanisme (fostex) is way way better
to remove pads ,, pull it out with out the rings ,, they have smaller rim  (any other pad will not fit perfectly).

I don't really like the use of the word warm because some people use it for bass, some for mid bass, and some for mids or even upper mids so it seems kinda vague. Does anyone know how the 7200 mids compare to the 7100 mids?

A whole step forward. 7200 has a very natural mid range presentation compared to the 7100. Not completely neutral, but it's fairly balanced.

Of course the downside when buying a newly released headphone is that you are often buying blind so the headphone you receive may not sound quite like you expected. In your case it sounds like they do to a greater extent but for me they're more of a departure.

I've given them a couple more evenings listening and I have to say I've gained a better appreciation of them. I think because I've been able to put my preconceived ideas /expectations to one side and simply appreciate them for what they are rather than what they are not. Ultimately though I don't think they are quite what I was looking for as a change of pace from my HE-560, so have decided to move them on and will likely replace them with one of the others I was looking at.

3 days ago I had the D7200 boxed up and had taken photos with the plan of selling them. The problem was me and not the headphone so was careful not to suggest otherwise in case anyone got the wrong end of the stick. Had no doubts it was a good 'un.

Well within hours of boxing they were back on my head again for one more listen and haven't been off much since. And with each new listen they impress me more and I've come to like them a great deal. This is a very good pair of headphones and suffice it to say they're going nowhere :)

What kind of preconceived ideas about these HPs did you have?

OK, I've done some more comparison listening between the Denon D7200 and D7100. Thoughts so far:

  1. They are essentially the same weight.
  2. Both are comfortable, but I prefer the feel of the D7100 on my medium-large head. Softer earpads and headband.
  3. The build quality of the D7200 is much better; no plastic and better adjustment mechanism. Oh yeah, and attractive wood earcups.
  4. The stock cable appears to be identical (from outward appearance) although the plugs on both ends (while interchangeable) are somewhat different.
  5. The D7200 is slightly less efficient. I can drive either with my Galaxy S7 phone, but the volume is close to max. To get the most out of either, a high quality amp is recommended, of course. In my case, it's a Benchmark DAC2.
  6. The D7100 has a more elevated bass and a more "live" sound. The D7200 sounds a bit damped by comparison, particularly in the bass region.
  7. The D7200 has superior soundstaging. You sit several rows back from the stage. With the D7100, you are essentially on stage.
  8. The D7200 has more clarity in the midrange. You won't necessarily hear new things over the D7100, but they will be more in focus.
  9. Treble is fairly similar. Perhaps a bit more air on the D7200.
  10. These phones are clearly from the same family, albeit differently voiced.

Bearing in mind that I listen primarily to rock, electronica, and jazz (with some classical, often chamber music, thrown in), I still have a preference for the D7100 as of right now. I'm going to give the D7200 more time to break in, but the bass reticence compared to the D7100 makes it a bit more of a cerebral listen, whereas the D7100 touches my emotions more.
