Hey everyone, I'm brand new to the forum, and I joined to get a headphone recommendation. I just received the ATH-M50x in the mail today from amazon. I had bought them after hearing all the glorious praise the headphones had from almost every reviewer and user on the internet. However, when I got the headphones and started listening, I was pretty disappointed. The sound feels like it's coming from a very narrow window rather that coming from all around. I did some research and found that the M50x had a very small sound stage, and im assuming thats why the sound sounded so narrow and distant (correct me if I'm wrong here). Anyway, as of 2016, what headphones sound best under $200? I've heard that the Beyerdynamic Dt 770 Pro had a good soundstage, but they are a pretty old headphone (Came out about 12 years ago) so, I was afraid they may have been outdated by another headphone. So for under $200 (a tad bit more would be fine), what closed headphone has the best soundstage, with at least decent clarity?

Sidenote: I listen to every type of music IE: Folk, Rock, Rap, Trap, Classical, you name it

Also, I would prefer isolation.

If you don't mind huge cans with a 3m long cable, the AKG K553 deliver very good soundstage and resolution for a closed can at it's price. I do think it is what you are looking for as far as sound goes. It is not difficult to drive, so it can be used directly from a portable device. However, the size and lack of foldability make it less practical for portable use.

The Denon DX000 series has good soundstage, yet ofcourse due to lack of isolation.  I can include Creative Aurvana, since that is basically a rebadged D1000.

I can say this for D2000, which I had for some time.  Great bass as a closed headphone, and the leaking sound creates good staging.

The K553 Pro has a very spacious sound for a closed headphone, but they aren't the most portable as mentioned.  If you can swing $250, the NAD HP50 has a very nice sound stage for a closed headphone, and you can the get the first generation B&O H6 for $199 right now which also does a great job spreading thnigs out.  To me the H6 is the best closed headphone I have heard so far, would definitely recommend.

Panasonic HD10 has a surprisingly large soundstage, but some significant tonality issues which can make female vocals sound thin and low mids sound a bit honky or echoey.
So that's one for a try-before-you-buy kinda situation.
I can imagine it's not for everyone.

I have the NAD Viso HP50, but its earpads have already flattened, so I cant say if sound signature stayed the same.  But yes, soundstage is good with these cans, due to bit angled drivers, like the MDR-1R/A so include them in your list
