Mytek Stereo 96 DAC

The Mytek website claims that their built in amp is better than the DAC1's. Has anyone verified this? That would be a very nice thing, if true.

Hmmm.... "The Mytek is about the same quality as the Benchmark but a lot different. It's taking the 'clear and fast' route, where the Benchmark to me sound like it's a little bigger than life in the lows and mids." http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/t/1737/0

It still seems like the Mytek might be too thin, given that AFAIK the DAC-1 is not known for being all that present in the low end, and the Mytek is supposed to be even less so.

The low end in the Dac1 is its biggest weakness... there's practically no bass on its own without a digital equalizer. That definitely puts it out of the running for me if that's the case. But we need someone to take the dive to provide more reviews!

AKM DAC usually isn't thin sounding so I don't know what's up with that guys impressions.

Here is one of the users' comment from the Mytek pages.
http://www.mytekdigital.com/stereo96dacspecial.htm

『Haven't tried the ADC, but in a side by side comparison I preferred the Mytek DAC to the Benchmark. It was a tough choice. They both sound great, but the Mytek had (to my ear) midrange detail that wasn't there in the Benchmark. I'm sure the Benchmark fans will say that it could be a hyped freq response in the Mytek doing that, but I don't care. I was hearing things that are important to me better on the Mytek than on the Benchmark. And I think Mytek has always had a rep for being pretty freakin' flat.

Basically, the Benchmark would have been my choice if it was to be the DAC for my home stereo. Some would say it's smoother, but to me it seemed "smoothed over" (just the tiniest bit. I'm being critical, but not criticizing). It made stuff sound "prettier" for lack of a better word than the Mytek did. The Mytek sounded a little more clinical or stark which is
what I preferred, considering it's application.』

After hearing the samples of Mytek Stereo 96DAC and the Benchmark DAC-1, I also agree that Mytek have a better mids and bass than Benchmark.

I just checked out the samples myself. The mytek's midrange seems to be better. the bass is a bit more. More importantly to me, the sound is just clearer. The decay, instrument separation, and attack was better on the mytek even from these samples. This was most evident on the guitars and cymbals on the evans sample. The ambience was better captured on the ravel sample.

How do those comparison files work? I mean, obviously we're hearing them through our own sources, which have their own sound signature, etc.

You just listen to one then the other. All it serves is a relative comparision not an absolute. Yes our own systems may have it's own signature but you can most likely tell the difference if your system has enough detail, is neutral and if your ears are trained.

Im going to have to say the problem is the latter. Which may be a good or a bad thing (certainly good for my wallet).

I am in the market for a source upgrade. It's nice to see that there is another contender. But no optical inputs? Tsk tsk.

I just heard the Bel Canto DAC2. I really liked it. I'm hoping the DAC1 or the MyTek is even better.

They're doing this to encourage the use of the DAC. This is targetted for pro audio use not really for single users so that may seem crazy for us as individual to buy two of their DACs. Thus it's like a 2 person groups buy for us if you wanted it cheaper.

Are you buying one of their converters or digital meters? I'm confused, this does not sound like a buy one get one half off kind of deal.

Just use AES/EBU from your RME
