Hi all,

This is my first post in the forum but I started yesterday reading this thread and other in this forum like Mad Lust Envy`s one that have helped me so much to learn and decide what is better for me.

So, I have some questions. I need headphones to use it on tv, xbox one, ps4, pc and mobile phone. I have seen several interesting models after I realised that gaming models like astro a50 are literally ****y in comparison.

My first question is about what do you recommend to me. I will use 70% gaming 20% series and 10% music. My budget is about 350$ and if possible I prefer not to buy any amplifier or similar. Adittionally, I think I won't require mixamp, dss2 and similar ones.

Confort is priority for me :)

Well, the models I have been searching with actually prices for me in Spain are these ones:

- Philips fidelio x2 (180€)
- Akg 701 (120€)
- Akg 712 pro (235€)
- Audio technica ATH-M50x (130€)
- Beyerdynamic MMX300 (204€)
- Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO 80 ohm or 32 ohm (160€), 880pro (260€) and 990pro (160€)
- Sennheiser hd650 (250€)

What do you think about it??

Thanks to all in advance!!

If you don't want to use an amplifier, just get ATH-M50X. All/most other headphones you've listed will have to be driven pretty hard by an amplifier. They sound pretty good even with phone and you really can't go wrong with them, they are also cheap and pretty comfortable.

and what about fidelio x2?? also need amp??

considering its low impedance I thought all platforms could drive it well and reviews are pretty good (in fact it is theorically much better than the audio technica)

Yes, they are should be easy to drive too, I haven't tried them, but I own M50s and they are extremely versatile headphones. Whlie M50s are comfortable IMO, there are more comfortable sets in existance.

Beyerdynamics should work well (32 ohm), 80 ohm would be OK, but I would avoid anything that is 250 ohm or even higher, unless you want to use than with an amplifier.

I've heard that K701 are pretty hard to drive (just ordered them myself, but planning to amp them) despite beeing only 62 ohms (they have low sensitivity),

Senns you are looking at will require an amp.

If I were you, I'd probbably end up with M50s or beyers (dt770 32 ohm).

Maybe you should consider buying an amplifier, ecpecially, if you are spending a lot of money on your headphones, but if you want to save some money and still have great quality, you can't go wrong with M50s (philips are probably good based on reviews, I just don't have any experiance with them).

Beyers (32 ohm) should work well without an amp too. For 80 ohm and above versions, you'll likely have to buy an amplifier - without it, you are pretty much limited to 32 ohm 770s at beyerdynamic.

If you are planning to get really nice headphones, it's probably worth getting at least decent amplifier.

The difference between buying headphones that don't require an amp and those that do is mainly cost. Also, if you want to listen to something from your phone, you probably don't want to carry around an amp that's bigger than your phone.

how much could cost a decent amplifier?? any good from creative store??

yes, sometimes I listen to music from my phone but aproximately only 10%

I appreciate so much your help!

I'm not an expert amp wise, but I think you can get something pretty decent for less than 100$.

Again, you won't need it for fidelio, m50s and 32 ohm beyers.

For example, I own m50x and sony mdr7506 and none of them require an amplifier, but K701 probably will. I should recieve them in 1-2 day(s).

If you are mainly going to use it for gaming you should consider the VMODA M100. The M100 have an optional Boom Mic for like 20 bucks, and they work great for watching movies. You mentioned that you want comfort so you would want to also invest in the X-tra large Pads for 20 dollars more. Even with all of that you would still have plenty of money left over for an amp like a FiiO E12 DIY.

mmmmm interesting advice man

so this headphones are better in gaming than other of my list??? reason???

nevertheless, in Spain this model is sold as 248€ and if you add the earpads that you mentioned, I will spend 268€

so if we compare these other models:

- Philips fidelio x2 (180€)
- Audio technica ATH-M50x (130€)
- Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO 32 ohm (160€)

I think that in terms of performance/money could not be the best. as you see if for example I choose beyerdynamic I can buy a mic and almost the amp

oooops I have just realized that beyerdynamic dt770 and audio technica are not over the ear....and according to I have read in this forum, for gaming and other tasks, over the ear models have better sound or stage if your prefer, if you are don't need noise isolation

is it correct??

searching on thommann website I found this other model:

Shure SRH840

any information about this one?

I forgot to ask you... If I bought a high sensivity model like akg, what could be the results connected to phone?? I suppose that worse than listening with low ones, right???

many thanks in advance!! your help is apreciated

They are both over the ear. I'll recieve my AKG K701 in a day or two and I'll report :p. I guess you just won't get the best sound ever, definetly worse than M50s. I'm not really Shure about Shure 840s. I think M50s are safer bet.
