After much time going on my own searching, I've finally caved in to asking here.
Just so you know where I'm coming from, I currently own Koss Pro DJ100 over ear headphones, and 3 in-ears: Xiaomi Pistons III, Audio Technica ATH CKX9, and MEElectronics M-Duo. My most recent purchase was the M-Duo, and I have to say I was not at all impressed with the sound. Everything sounds so muffled, and I'm guessing that's because they're more for the bass heads. So as a result I'm still searching.
Now my preferred music genre is rock and metal, but I sometimes mix in a little bit of rap.
I love the Audio Technica headphones I have (and I can't get over how nice the flat cable is) but they feel a bit too large to wear around on a daily commute. I also think the Pistons are great but I'm still wondering if there is something better with the same low profile.
Tl:dr - I'm wondering if there are specific headphones out there better fit for hard rock and metal music (I really like a flat response otherwise), preferably compact and with a flat cable, and in the price range of $40 to no more than $100.
I'm currently in consideration of AKG K376 and Audio Technica ATH-CKR7, but still unsure of how well they'd sound with these genres.
