Hi
smily_headphones1.gif

I am looking for some new headphone. I currently have Bose QC25. They are great on planes, but I am not impressed by the sound quality.

Price: $400-600.
Size: around ear
I am listening to a lot of different music, mostly rock.
Not sure if I should go for open or closed phones. I will use them most at home.
I don’t have an amp/dac for the moment, but I will probably buy one later.

I have seen on different phones like Master & Dynamic MH40, AudioQuest NightHawk and Shure SRH1540.

Philips Fidelio X2 is a good open option with a great big soundstage and very nice bass. It would be perfect for home and does not require an amp--it can be used straight from a phone or DAP.

Sennheiser HD600 is another excellent open option with incredible detail and midrange richness (vocals are incredible). It has a somewhat light bass signature, its only real drawback. It does require an amplifier, so you would have to buy that at the same time you bought the HD600.

The Oppo PM-3 would be an awesome closed option--an excellent planar magnetic that also does not require an amplifier.

Another good closed option would be the NAD HP50--nicely balanced, comfortable, extremely well-made. No amp needed.

There are a couple of options for you.

The Philips Fidelio X2 is really tempting. They are getting so much good reviews and they are pretty affordable (half the price of the Oppo PM-3). Are the PM-3s worth the extra money?

Currently my preferred headphone is the Beyerdynamic T90 :)

I sadly have to say no to open phones because of the others in my house :frowning2:

So then I left with MH40, Shure SRH1540, Oppo PM-3 and NAD HP50. I have really no idea of how these compares...
