iPhone 7 Will Revolutionize Portable Audio for the First Time in a Decade

I'm also intrigued whether the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter is not affected by the dreaded EU volume cap. I would test it but I was able to switch off the EU volume cap on my iPhone 6 Plus a couple of years ago when it was jailbroken and surprisingly the EU volume cap is still switched off even when my iPhone 6 Plus isn't running a jailbreak now.

Are you married ?

If you are not you can try it anyway.

If the dongle sounds as loud as the hpo of your uncapped iPhone then it is not capped.

I know the regulations quite well (better than Apple Store manages LOL) and it should NOT be capped because there are no bundled earphones in the retail box that you can plug into the dongle...but on the pessimistic side i fear that Apple just played it safe can capped the dongle output as if the Earpods could be plugged.

At least there is some hope now.

I really hope we'll see some high end 3rd party Bluetooth W1 cables for high end in ears such as the 846's.
Also looking forward to seeing if Apple jumped to Aptx HD or what exactly the W1 chip does apart from the instant pairing.

I believe Shure will use eventually the W1 chip, either on cable or even directly in its HPs. Shure has had good relation with Apple over the years so I believe they will develop something. But I am not sure about timing...I guess it will take time since Shure is also not exactly the fastest developer on earth:)) I also love Shure iems and I hope they will do it!!

Since cables have never been a hassle to me but having to charge batteries is, i do crave for a Shure Lightning cable crafted for their SE line (low Zout, low distortion+noise)

Yep, it's pick your poison - cables that can get caught in door handles and yank your unsuspecting CIEM out of your ear, or carry multiple charging cables, and chargers. If the audio quality were the same for wired and wireless, I would go wireless just to save money having to buy IEM cables and adapters.

There is a report in the Macrumors forums today that the new lightning headphones Apple sells require iOS 10 to work. Leaks of the 3.5mm adapter have reported the same thing. Interested to hear more testing of these devices to figure out what's going on.

Yes that has been reported several times in this thread, also that they should work on older devices once upgraded to 10

I think this has more to do with the version of iTunes (Apple Music) in iOS10. I noticed the iOS10 version displays the name of the external DAC when it's connected. It did this for both my DFR and LH V2+. Hopefully this is a indication that external DAC support is heading to better integration with iOS.

Ok, sorry if I missed that. Why require an update to iOS 10 if these devices have a DAC in them? Shouldn't they work without a software upgrade like all our other DAC's do?

There are already a load of 3rd party lightning to 3.5mm adapters being advertised on eBay, all around the same price point at the official Apple version. Strangely, or not, none of them seem to provide any real specifications; I'm not sure how these things work but it makes you wonder how good they will be.

Remember, that prior to iOS 10, there was never any "official" support for external DACs. The CCK cable was/is a work around. While the external devices seems to work fine, there were problems of random disconnects and/or noise. In order for Apple's own external DAC to be at the level of true usability and support, I would bet they had to make some changes to iOS. However, this could also cause some "older" DACs to have problems so that's one of the reasons I started the separate thread.

@Solarium

Can you do a battery consumption test (ie. how much time passes per percentage loss)? Also, can you confirm that there is no hiss, especially when you set the volume to max? I know the SE846s are very sensitive. And I'm assuming that the 10-15% increase works when the volume is set to the same number of steps/ticks on the screen, right? Otherwise, the dongle doesn't seem to be an issue. I'm already satisfied at the iPhone's built-in DAC/amp.

Haven't done the battery consumption test yet. I tried the max volume test though and noticed a very slight hiss that's less than that of the Mojo on the 846. I think this hiss is slightly louder than the one with the 3.5mm, but it's so barely noticeable and you will never play music that loud. One thing I also noticed is that stopping music on the dongle will turn the dongle off after about 1 second, and you will hear this with a "pop." I switched back to the 3.5mm and didn't hear this pop, so I'm assuming it's iphone's way of turning the dongle's DAC/amp off. And yes the 10-15% volume increase is with same clicks, I use 5 clicks from 0 for testing. There is definitely a difference in volume and sound after testing it again today. The dongle sounds more "explosive" and less linear, almost like there's an emphasis on treble and bass. It doesn't really distract my listening experience though.
