If you are only connecting your speakers to your PC and control your volume with it, just get a DAC if you are trying to improve the sound of just them. However, if you want to use headphones, then you'll want a headphone amp, which typically comes with a volume control. So that means getting something that has both outputs for your speakers and headphones--it will necessarily have a pre-amp.
