On certain records of Diana Krall the Sibilance are TERRIBLE ! try : How insentive at about 50 seconds of the end and you'll understand ! But with her last album : Wallflowers . Zero Sibilance ! One more time That's the record , and No Dacs or Amplifiers will cure this !

Everything that could ever possibly be said about the HD800 and HD800S has already been said. Just not everyone has yet had a chance to say it.

I think so , at least for me , when a record have a lot of Sibilance like that , the solution is to listen with a warmer headphone. That's just m'y point of view , must take with à grain of salt !
Fully agree, if sibilance exists on the recording thats just the way it is. Of course, we also all hear differently and what is sibilant for you could be perfectly ok for me.
The HD800S are not sibilant, it is always the song or the setup people have.....or their ears.
I said this before but if a song is recorded in a certain way and it doesn't please my audiohile ears, I still don't use EQ or violate my headphones via modding, I rather accept the song as it is intended or turned out on the record.

Is anyone else getting microphonics from their earcups/hinges? I get a really annoying sort of popping noise sometimes when I move my head which seems to be caused by the hinge pin not being fully seated, and now that I reseated it by tapping on it (and slightly scratching the plastic) the other side is now making the same noise. Not impressed by the ergonomics and QC of this headphone.

You shouldn't have to tap on that pin, rather push it in with your thumb or thumbnail straight in while gently swiveling the earcup.

And what do you mean by microphonics, what are you hearing?
Does it have a 'sproingy' kinda sound?
I wonder if the spring that sits in the same area as that pin, has slipped off of its normal position.

The microphonics are a quiet kind of popping noise, it actually sounds a lot like a very quiet drum sound.

Could be something in your chain making the popping sound, it even could be the software player, I had something similar with foobar, ASIO wasn't setup right.

In any case my solution would be to try the 800s on a different system if you can eg:- stereo amplifier, and not using anything for your current setup. If no change and it is the 800s send them back or contact Sennheiser.

It's definitely a mechanical issue because I can recreate it simply by tilting by head back and forward. It's not a big deal so I'm just going to hope it goes away eventually.

So is the popping something to do with the driver or something floating insider the ear cup?

In any case I would be contacting Sennheiser

I don't think it is because the right side stopped after I fiddled with the hinge for a while. I don't really want to  contact Sennheiser because I've heard turnaround times can be abysmal and if the right one stopped with a little encouragement perhaps the left will stop on its own. Maybe it just needs to be broken in.

I just finished listening to J.S. Bach's Chaconne from his Partita for Solo Violin No. 2.

And I unfortunately found the highs somehow a bit piercing. The piece itself is 15 mins long, so you can imagine the intensity of the effect.

I had never faced such thing since I got my HD 800 S in January, and frankly did a lot of classical listening since then.

I am hoping this has to do with the recording rather than the HPs. It is a rather old recording after all.

I wonder if anybody had any piercing effect while listening to any solo violin works with HD 800 S.
Anybody?

I use no EQs. Simply drive HPs with a Chord Mojo, that's it.

For reference purposes, the track info:

Performer: Dmitry Sitkovetsky

Since you’ve had your “S”s for almost 6 months without problem I’d definitely rule out the Senns.... maybe just a hyper sensitive day…could actually be many contributing factors…or just the digital mastering of the recording.

I still consider 1998 fairly recent...it's all relative
