XDuoo X3 DSD 24Bit / 192KHz CS4398 Chip Lossless Music Player

...But all the time I used it I noticed/felt two things without an amp:

1. Stock sounded like it had a darker background.
2. Hi gain was not a linear boost. It's more like a boost on some of the frequencies, and used to distort the tonality.

I've been wanting to get an amp to stack with my X3 to see how far I can push its sound quality.  Because I'm a cheapskate who still wants awesome sound (that's what the X3 is all about, right?), and because I enjoy the challenge of DIY, I'm planning on building my own Altoids tin amp--but not a CMOY.  Totally new and different...the first portable, CLASS A, DIY-friendly amp design that I know of..  I just posted about it on Head-Fi last night...

Can't wait to hear where this takes the sound of the X3.  Will definitely share my impressions on the pairing once I've built mine and had a listen.

I will give this a look. Might be cool. For now, I strap a Walnut to my X3 and use that. X3 is really an Amiga MOD player to me. I have 2 cards stuffed full of MOD, XM, IT, S3M and with the EQ of Rockbox and the Walnut's 4.2W RMS output you can't go wrong.

Yep, and one of these days you'll listen on a much better player and....well, that will be it for you.

I got an Opus#1 and couldn't be happier. Sound of the X3 is close (both use CS4398 chip, Opus has dual chips) to the Opus.
Opus has a bit more air and resolution.
My X3 has been relegated to walks and times I don't want to take out the Opus.
the best part? No need to Rockbox, no down sampling, and Audio-Opus actually supports their product. Not sure how many
UI upgrades have been done but they're very on top of fixing issues unlike Xduoo in the case of the X3.
The downside? It costs about 3x the price of the X3 (but you do get a Dignis case thrown in).

Real solutions are so much more enjoyable, and although from certain perspectives overpriced, in the end they deliver.

Interesting, I have been reading your Walnut thread, only read up to 25 pages so far.  Someone who did the measurements said that when using it as an amp with the analog volume, it is very sensitive, from your experience is it too senstive for 64ohm Monk+ ?

Also, does the Walnut as an amp enhance the SQ of the X3 in any way?

IMO it does because it adds more energy to the X3 sound. One day i will get a spare X3 and swap the opamps etc on it.

Also it is not too sensitive for anything, because at least in RB, line out is volume controlled. So you can set the output volume to a good match for your headphones.  i use with 16 ohm earbuds all the time, 64 ohm monk+ too.

IMO choice of low pass filter and gain opamp are the weakest parts of X3. Hopefully, one day mainline RB will include proper X3 support and SQ will be definitely as good as stock OS. For pepole without hi-res, RB is great. for people with hi res, don't put 44.1 on your X3 and it will be good.

Hmm I don't remember the X3 getting warm. I had a black one for the longest time and it only got warm if i was charging it for a long time. Got rockbox on my new gold one and seems like it get crazy hot during long playback, to the point where i won't charge and play or keep it playing in the leather case for very long.
