There is a used Heimdall 2 with plugs for HEXV2 in the UK if you are interested in a fantastic top cable. Extremely light and durable materials. Try it out with your HEXV1 or HEXV2 if you have the chance.

Just purchased a pair today! I've been coveting these ever since the first version came out and I auditioned them in store. It was really the first headphone out of the multitudes I've owned and auditioned since starting this hobby that have really genuinely left me impressed from the get go.
 
Was really impressed with the Elears as well and ultimately was a/b-ing the two as to which I would walk out with. I was almost hoping the Elears would be able to edge them out as the build and aesthetics IMO are a step up (while also being cheaper), but kept finding myself gravitating to the HEX in the end. The imaging and layering are immensely satisfying.

I recently acquired an sr-007 system, but i keep coming back to the HE-X

I had and sold the HEX1 (one of the first to buy in the UK I believe) and have just impulse bought HEX2  
 
Imaging and layering are a strong point for sure.  I like the Elear but couldn't get past the small soundstage in the end.  
 
My only nagging doubt is - how does the updated HEX compare to the updated HEK?  I mean the HEK is a lot more dosh, but is it significantly better?  I could send the HEX2 back (bought from amazon)... 

I've had the hex 1 or 2 for 1.5 years I also want to know is the hek a leap above have a big bday coming soon and can't get to hear the heck

Honestly, I didn't like the HEK. The HEX is far more dynamic and fun.

I tried the gain 3, gain 5 and 10.

Same here. I was quite surprised actually how much more I preferred the HEX.

I think the line of thinking goes like this, "Oh, well, it's the same manufacturer, it looks similar aesthetically, and it's a lot more expensive, therefore it is an upgrade." I have been guilty of that type of thinking, but I am learning that it is not accurate. At this level, price doesn't always equate to best I am finding.
 
It's all about matching personal preferences and expectations with sound signatures.

I you really like your HE-X you will immediately ditch that sub par stock cable and buy something better. I'm not saying you should splurge on a $300 pair of sennheiser HD700 balanced cabling though im sure you will get some ROI, but the dyson audio SPOCC cable I got off ebay for $60 is making quite the difference. The sound is any brighter but just sounds Deeper, and more detailed and smoother in general. Bass is tighter and a lot less boomy in the lower regions. It really cleans things up and you don't realize how much the bass slows the phone down till you hear it. Really, cant say enough about the bass, real shocker. High frequency detail is much clearer now. Really amazed it would make this much of a difference, since my primary reason was the aesthetic appeal. My stock cable was fraying, and the 3.5mm cable had fallen apart. just a poor showing in the cable department.

Unfortunately I think I may have picked up the last single ended option lol, but I'm going to be getting these once I upgrade my amp.

My wallet is relieved to still hear that the SR-007 is still ruling the roost in detail retrieval, transparency, layering and just that stax speed. whew  The HE-X is a really really good phone regardless, just a pleasure to listen to. When I put them on I dont go oh its missing this or that, it just sounds good and gets me toe tapping ( this eerily reminds of the whole fang bian fiasco about the pricing, but he was half right?). This tells me that although it is marketed as portable, these phones will scale decently. very nice

Floored how amazing these sound with jazz - I've never heard Miles Davis / Coltrane sound as euphoric as I have with these. It's the first piece of audio equipment I've actually believed to be worth every penny invested. Haha - enough gushing now. Back to listening!

Anyone with a Little Dot amp that use thoses headphones? For a magnetoplanar headphone, which gain is more preferable with an OTL amp? An OTL normally can not drive a lot of current, but thoses headphones have more sensitivity, so i think that is it possible to find a "good" setting with an OTL too.
