Hifiman Edition X

Yup the HE-X are definitely my favorite thus far, bass is deep and powerful with just a tiny bit of power, soundstage is very tall and very defined. I have been thinking of getting the HE-k as a result, but at that price I would probably be going with the Stax sr-007. instead

In some ways it's too bad that the HEX and HEK are constantly compared to each other since they are at very different price points but I guess since they have the same shape they will always be linked.  Even most of the professional reviews are combined reviews. On the other hand, the fact that there is a lot of debate about which one is better says a lot about how great the HEX actually is.

I'm (desperately) waiting to pair mines with the FiiO X5 III. I think I'll give them a try before making up my mind whether to go balanced or not.

Yeah, I thought about a balanced hex, but after a few fabulous sessions with the hex 2, as far as I can tell the whole idea is meaningless with these cans.  They trounced the various balanced cans I heard at the NYC Canjam for instance running through various cavalli amps...  including those balanced aeons and ether flows, though only by small margin (and a few thousand dollars  :)  ...and frankly all headphones I've had the privilege to listen to in general over years from hifi stores and studios and my ever changing assortment.  the signature is addictive, and while not at all a monitor, reference, or detail beast like the hd800s's or hek2, they are everything I personally want from hifi.  easy to satisfy upstream and easy to listen to, and tout a (quasi) "reasonable" price, especially factoring in the lack of an ES amp or balanced rig.

$.02

I went with these for the same reason, the addicting signature that doesn't need an expensive setup to sound beautiful

I use an Uptone Regen > Micromega Mydac (although would like to try a multibit DAC)> Rupert Neve Amp.
Great detail and soundstage.
Very good bass and dynamics.
Always fun to listen to and not fatiguing.

In my experience, balanced He-X v2 trounces SE He-X v2 every single time, especially when using that horrendously underperforming stock He-X v2 cable.  On the day I received my He-X v2, I thought the SE cable was adequate until I replaced it with the Sennheiser CH700S, and what a difference!  Suffice it to say, I have never gone back to the stock SE cable again, and it has since then been in the box gathering (metaphorical0 dust and cobwebs.

Secondly, the He-1000 is superior to the He-X, in every way conceivable, which is not to say the He-X is bad sounding in anyway... It is not, and i enjoy it very much with certain kinds of songs, but it does really not measure up to the He-1000... Not at all...

Of course your mileage may vary...  as far as these individual subjective "mileages" go...  I just thought I should throw that in there...

Can't comment on the HE-1000 but totally disagree about the cable. Prefer the stock cable to the CH700S, Cardas Cross balanced and Oppo balanced. This is out of the pro ican and sennheiser hdva600 amps. Maybe with a different amp, the results would be different.

I just bought a set of the edition x from Overture Audio in Ann Arbor Mi it was a their last pair and a demonstration model and broken in. These are really nice headphones and one of the things I think is funny is they can be teamed up with almost any thing amps cables and still sound good. The sound is so natural to many boring which i think in the end will make these headphones be know as great headphones. I also have the 400i and will I be keeping them. Also very nice headphones more amp and cable dependent imo. The x just let music flow out of them a very wonderful sounding headphone and if I may say a very seductive and addictive one a total pleasure to listen to.

Well, you were luckier than I was then in that department...  On the rig I am referring to (Bryston 2B LP, using a singled-ended connection, and then 4-pin balanced connection via speaker taps), the stock cable sounded rather limited, bottle-necked, and frankly "constipated," in comparison to the balanced cable.  Note that I used the CH700S for the comparison, only because it is the first balanced cable I had most readily at hand nearby, and that I have moved on to using other aftermarket cables for the He-X.  The result I reported was however based on the comparative evaluation of the stock cable vs the CH700S...  I have other rigs I could try the stock cable on, but I was too disappointed with the initial result to bother with any further attempts, and simply decided to "bury" that cable...After reading your impressions, I am encouraged to give it another try, and will report back when I get around to it...

Very interesting. Would you mind posting a photo of how you connect balanced headphones to speaker outputs? I'd love to see that.

Well I bit the bullet and bought one, should be here tomorrow.  Eagerly hoping it lives up to its reputation of being a "musical," headphone with a good soundstage.  I thought the LCD-2rev 2 was it for me but to my surprise I found a fostex with mids that were even more lush but utterly inferior in every other way, and then the LCD-2 soundstage started feeling more and more congested, finally all this non-stop hype over the edition xv2 and I've caved.  Probably will start testing the waters with Odesza (sheer ear candy,) move onto Lana Del Rey/Florence + and the Machine to see how it handles female vocals/string sections, Rachmaninov for classical, then Blink 182 and Royal Blood for modern rock.

I know this might sound like lunacy but will probably be doing most of my testing through my iphone, I've had fancy tube rigs before but with my hectic life 80% of my listening is away from my setup.
