Brainwavz New S3 discussion thread.

Just started this to move the discussion here rather than the mfg. announcement page. Pretty good reviews so far but some negative comments as well and the usual arguments as to who might be sucking up to Brainwavz for a pair of free IEM's.

I liked the original R3 a lot, despite its mad design. But the S5s just had too much of a treble peak for my liking so I smashed them up in a fit of rage one day when everything just conspired to destroy me.

Do these new S3s compare favourably to either?

IMO no. The S3 is a very strange combination of the S1 and the S0, none of which come close to the clarity of the R3 or the raw fun factor of the S5.

Just curious how long y'all burned these in? I was fairly disappointed in them until I got up to 100+ hours. Now they're starting to shine a lot more. In fact I'm having to rewrite a significant portion of my review either because they're getting better or my old geezer brain is getting burned in to their sound sig.

Here is what I posted yesterday in the Sponsor forum.

Ok I fired up Code Cool by Patricia Barber and did some A/B testing back and forth between the S5 and S3.

What I noticed was that the S5 is more V shaped with deeper harder bass and sharper treble while retaining a very clear cool sounding midrange.

The S3 was not as deep or as impactfull in the bass or as extended and sharp in the treble but has a clear but warmer midrange generally speaking. But the S3 also has some peaks in the upper midrange and lower treble so it retained most of Patricia's sharpness on her S's as well as the crash and shimmer of the drum kit.

So from this very small sample size go S5 if you want bigger bass and a cooler midrange. Go S3 if you want a more balanced signature with more warmth in your midrange without sacrificing all of the edge in the upper mids and lower treble.

One other note here, as I walked to my car I noticed wind noise on the S3 so switched to the S5 and the noise was greatly diminished on the S5.I also find fit easier with the S5 than the S3 as I like the little bend in the S5.

Since the OP edited the thread title I wanted to subscribe as well. I have received my S3 review sample yesterday but had to leave it at the office because I am on a trip right now. Will be chiming in again when I get my hands on...

The OP didn't edit the title. The PC Police did.

PC principal from this seasons South Park?

Anyway, I find them to be overly warm, with just a touch more bass than what neutral would be. It's not so much the bass that bothers me but the warmth in the 200-500 hz area. They also seem to sound a bit congested and doesn't have the amount of detail I had expected. Comfort isn't anything special either. They are more comfortable worn cable up and over the ear, but still nothing special in terms of comfort and fit. Worn cable down they aren't comfortable for me. The size and shape of them just doesn't agree with my ears.

I'd like to see Brainwavz put out a real flagship with a focus on being neutral like most audiophiles are after.

I'd love to see a triple driver Brainwavz flagship. Here's my review. Asked my wife to compare/contrast the S3 to the Delta she's been using for the past month or so and she said "It's a much richer sound." Now she claims she doesn't know where she put the S3. I smell deception and wager that they will show up in her ears at the gym tomorrow.
