ONKYO DP-X1 | Dual Sabre Dacs | Balanced | Sabre BTL Amp | MQA | DSD 256 | Android 5 |

Sound preference is quite personal. I would suggest you also consider:

- dp-x1 has 2.5 balanced output, x7 doesn't

- the Music app is by Onkyo, x7 doesn't have it's own player app if I am not wrong.

- dp-x1 has not only EQ , but Lock Range, Digital filter, Upsampling , all are ways to tune the sound. I don't think x7 user has that many ways to the sound.

- dp-x1 has 2 dac, 2 amp. x7 has only 1 dac 1 amp. Even the LO output, dp-x1 can use two dac for dual mono design.

This is a really misinformed biased comparison...

- X7 has swappable amp modules, there is a balanced module which can provide balanced output (as well as other swappable modules)

- X7 has its own Fiio-designed player app.

- Fiio X7 uses the desktop sabre dac which has capability for 8 channels, whereas DP-X1 uses 2x stereo dacs. It's not simply a counting game.

- DP-X1 can only use dual dac and dual amp in balanced, and only uses 1 dac 1 amp for SE.

- You can't "use 2 dac for dual mono design", dual mono design refers to the circuit design. A device is either a dual mono design, or it is not.

True, but I doubt there is any viable audible difference, it just sounds more impressive to say. I'm not making a value judgement saying one sounds better than the other, but differences in DACs at this level are so very, very, very small.

Edit: and I realize you weren't saying one sounded better than the other, you were just replying to some misinformation. And again, to correct myself, your point is correct that with the X7 there is no need to have two DACs to achieve the same channel information.

It really doesn't seem to have been much of an issue in reality. We are now several months into people owning them and all of those predictions about the jacks failing have so far anyway proven false. Can it change and a bunch start failing? Sure, but I still don't really believe that is going to happen.

I am unfortunately the victim of a faulty 2.5 Jack to the point were it's unusable so it does happen, the worst thing is that I got the device from someone from these forums and was told that was nothing wrong with the player. Hopefully onkyo will fix it for me but will most likely have to pay for it

That sucks, but give us more details, was the jack flawed right from the get go?

Just a quick question about balanced in ear. What is needed and what brands would sound good under $400? Do I need a special set for the DP-X1? I like my Sennheiser CX 485 single ended. I am waiting on a balanced cable for OPPO PM-3 to be made. I would like a pair of reasonably priced in ears that are good sound quality. Is that possible? I am not sure about the TRSS and how to get the balanced output to sound good. I can wear headphones around the house but for listening in public would like in ears.

Really sorry to hear that. If you can get it back to Onkyo they should repair it under warranty. Unless it was faulty when you received it (and I think I recall from your previous posts that this wasn't the case), you shouldn't blame the seller. Most of the failures with the jacks will build up over a period of time but then fail suddenly without warning.

I do hope that the apparent delay in the wider release of this player might be related to a hardware modification to address this problem. I recall that when the device was initially released in Japan, Onkyo were offering an extended three year warranty at a small additional cost. This was subsequently withdrawn as an option. If the withdrawal was related to the identification of this endemic design flaw, then this was a very cynical move.

I'd contrast that with the Cavalli Liquid Carbon headphone amplifier. This device suffered a number of early failures due to shortcomings with third-party suppliers. Cavalli's response was to offer a lifetime warranty on the amp, transferrable even if it's sold on. Then again amplifiers are relatively simple beasts. I'm not sure any of us could afford a bespoke Android based DAP from a small independent design house.

I'm not blaming the seller but when I got the player it did have some play in it but all worked well so I didn't think much of it, but I also wasn't using the balanced jack a lot since the sound quality wasn't that noticeable to me. But when the last update rolled around the sound from the balanced out changed dramatically for the better so I started using it and it only lasted a few weeks before the jack failed. I've also only had the do-x1 for a little over a month

Where are you based and where was the player originally purchased?

Is it feasible to get it back to Onkyo under a warranty claim?

Seller told me that he would contact the company he got it from to see if the warranty was transferable, that's one of the major reasons I bought it from him but after he got the money I never heard back from him. Oh well I guess that's how it goes when you buy used items, I'm just hoping onkyo can fix it as I love this little gadget

I'm in Hawaii and I was told it was purchased from eglobalcentral. I have no receipt to leave the purchase so I'm guessing I can't claim it under warranty but I'm going to contact onkyo and see how it goes

I read his profile and he isn't very active on the forums normally plus his profile says he travels as a musical producer so perhaps he just hasn't received your contact, or he is himself waiting to hear back from the seller (likely Price Japan). I would go ahead and contact PJ yourself and ask about getting a warranty claim and how it works. My understanding is that PJ will make the claim, but the user is responsible to ship there and back, but I could be wrong. Anyway, that sucks and I hope it works out for you.

I am sorry to hear yet again another issue with the balanced out Jack .... Man, if you guys not doing anything to help it, then better not be buying it from Japan ? Shipping and waiting time will be a bitch, and by the time you get it back, you probably ready to buy a new DAP. I couldn't stretch it though about the Gaps issues, but ....

Assuming if they fix it, or simply replace the broken socket with the exact new one ? Lol....however, there are ways to fix it yourself. I would not wait for something like that to happen and wait for warranty works when I know some simple fix can solve the problem for years to come.
