Gustard X20 DAC

Quadman, I participated in a 6 DAC comparison recently, carefully level matched, and aside from the AQUA LaScala being way out in front, the SPDIF cables made more difference than most of the other 5 DACs. The cables especially affected the soundstage width/depth, detail retrieval, but not much tonally. I'm sure the USB cables will have similar differences, so be sure to try as many as possible to find the most synergistic match for the X20u.

Yea cables, My venture down that road will have to wait until I finish the mods to my and buddies dac's.  At least now when I compare I use the same cable on both (I just move my Regen from dac to dac and cable comes with) then I can focus on what works best.  I still need to see how my WW starlight (red) compares to the AQ diamond.  My WW has been out of system for over 3 weeks as I used a 3m USB cable (generic gold plated monoprice) to easily move from dac to dac.  I like the diamond, but at $700 is the value there?  That AC mod was more significant of a change than USB cables (that I have tried so far) were.

Curious, has anyone gotten the Gustard X20u to play a DSD512 signal.  Owners of the Gustard u12 (or similar Tanly) connecting to the X20u with i2s should, in theory be able to play DSD512 if this dac is indeed capable of it.  I don't remember reading about anyone doing this.

The DAC is capable, but the DDC part not.  U12 and the internal USB-DDC board of DAC-X20U have the same specifications.
Either DSD512 native or DoP512 must be given through the HDMI LVDS I2S/DSD input via an HDMI cable, or through the PCIe X1 slot inside DAC-X20.

What do you think of that:

When the now huge thread started on the F-1 board I was very excited to hear about this piece, I stopped reading that thread once it became massive and filled with a lot of chatter.  I find it strange now that the specs on this unit only go up to DSD256!  I was pretty sure everyone expected 512 from it.  Not sure if it is driver related as the Xmos 200 chip has the speed to process 512 or just a conservative spec.  Also the price jumped almost $100 from the expected $300.  Its now almost half the price of a X20.  I won't spend that kind of money if it only does 256 as I get that now with the DIYinHK driver.

The firmware at the time of product launch will not support DSD512, according to the manufacturer.
It does support DSD256 both native and in DoP, which is quite beneficial to users of JPLAY (and other music players, the DSD output of which is only in DoP) who want to play DSD256 files with DAC-X20.

What is the warranty for the X20,  the manual I downloaded says "But after one month till 2 years, the cost of reparations will be borne by the user and the manufacturer is only responsible for the freight"

Damn should of read the fine print before I ordered. Thought it was a 2 year warranty.

Can see this turning out bad, hope quality control is good and the dac lasts the distance.

My memory tells me my X20 has a one year warranty. How can it be bad if it is one year or even two years?

Just about every electronic component I've ever owned has had either a 30 day, 90 day, or one year warranty. I can't think of the last time I had one fail. No, wait. My old Denon amp died after ten years. I had it recapped, so now it may last another ten. Honestly, dishwashers and refrigerators fail much more quickly than my audio gear. I fully expect this DAC to outlast my need for it. That is to say, I'll get upgradeitis in 2 to 3 years and relegate this DAC to my secondary system or even my son (if he's interested).

Why would it 'turn out bad'? Gustard, the company, has a track record of good quality products. The company doesn't exist solely to sell crap to unsuspecting foreigners. They also sell to Chinese consumers.

A warranty is part of why you buy new. If you have to pay for repairs after one month, not exactly a warranty is it?

I emailed Forexmen on ebay about the warranty, let's see what he says. If I have to pay for repairs then that is false advertising. Clearly states on the ebay listing, 2 year warranty.

It also could be a strange chinese/english translation and the meaning is different.

I sent this message to the seller on ebay

"Warranty info in the user manual says that the user has to pay for repairs after one month until the 2 year period is over.

Is this correct?

Forexmen replied:

"Hello

yes.

But don’t you worry, X20 until now, no one maintenance case.

best regards

OMG, last time I ever order from Gustard. What a scam, offer a 2 year warranty and then in the manual state that the buyer has to pay for repairs. I paid $800 for a product with practically no warranty protection.

Update:

"
Do I have to pay for the repairs or does Gustard pay for the repairs in the 2 year warranty period?

Forexmen:

"No need to pay any maintenance costs.

Just send back shipping fee.

We are responsible to you for shipping.

But this is only theory, I don‘’t think it will happen any problems within two years.

Have a good day :)"

I now got this reply. Sounds a little better but the, "it's only a theory" does not sound to promising. Cross your fingers and hope for the best with this one.

Pretty sure that's a translation error. I got mine directly from Gustard's Taobao page (I'm in Hong Kong). Within warranty, I will only have to pay to send the DAC to them for repairs (from the Chinese description on the page), and they will pay for everything else including the return shipping.
