$100 phones - what to buy?
Sep 1, 2015 at 10:32 AM Post #16 of 27
I'm curious. why are we talking about $25 headphones when my budget is $100 or higher?

is there no difference between the low point and the high point of my budget?

I would prefer to spend more on my headphones, so likely will hold off and just use the IE80's I'm borrowing and save for something better.

The $25 earphones he mentioned used to sell for $80.

The best $25 earphones might be better than lower performing $100 ones.

The Hifiman RE-400 IEM has gotten a number of great reviews. It is $79. I haven't heard it, but am getting tempted to buy it at some point. It is supposed to be very natural sounding.

I can get the RE-400 or RE-400a for $110 CDN currently.

are we talking the same thing? the HE400's fit into that $479 price bracket you speak of.

That was a typo. I meant to type $79. Notice that the $ sign is capital 4 on the keyboard.

The Etymotic hf-5 have incredible noise isolation for planes and other loud environments. They have single balanced armature driver and are amazingly clear and neutral.

HF5 is expensive though at $129. The Sony XBA-1 is also a single balanced armature earphone, and also offers great isolation when it is deeply inserted. The XBA-C10 has the same driver as the XBA-1, however since it is a different shape since the driver is mounted vertically rather than hozizontally as in the XBA-1, I don't know if the XBA-C10 offers as much isolation as a deeply inserted XBA-1(the end on the driver even with the tragus, and not sticking out beyond it) .

I'm having trouble finding this Sony IEM in Canada...aside from Amazon, which doesn't help me any as I leave on Saturday.

to change subject...

everything I've ready says the FiiO X3 g2 is better than the X1. Is it worth spending the extra for the X5 g2 over the X3 g3? the only difference I see is the ability to load two microSD cards for the X5 g2.

keep in mind that I'm aborting a purchase now as I have confirmed I'm using the IE80's from Sennheiser that a friend has.

The XBA-1 was $25 new last year, but now the price has gone up. It was originally $80. The similar XBA-C10 is still around $30 to $40. There is also the XBA-100 at around $70 on Amazon.

The Fiio X1 and $200 headphones would likely give you more bang for your buck for sound quality. Any particular reason you are going with the X3?

+1 on this, better get good headphones, and player... actually if headphones are low impedance and sensitive enough so they don't require strong amp you might even spend all for headphones and use them with smartphone and still get noticeably better sound than player + cheaper headphones.
