  Right from the website...

So what’s the real answer? How is Gungnir Multibit half the price of Yggdrasil?
Easy. It’s a simpler DAC. The power supply has no choke-input, shunt-regulated stage like in Yggdrasil, the chassis and construction more streamlined, we’re using more surface-mount parts in the analog section, and (most importantly), we’re using 18-bit AD5781BRUZ D/A converters, rather than the mind-blowingly expensive AD5791s we use in Yggdrasil. However, the completely insane, closed-form, DSP-based, 18,000-tap filter remains in Gungnir Uber.

More interesting than the technical differences, however, will be the practical differences. I'm excited to hear what people think, as I'll definitely be picking up one of the two!

Yes and yes. Mike Moffat has posted that he leaves his equipment on all the time, and that in any DAC he designs, he designs it so that the important components stay on whether the DAC is on or off (as long as it's plugged in, obviously).

Interesting. I'll probably turn mine off when not in use, and if I go on vacation, unplug it, in order to save energy.  And I definitely won't be leaving the amp on all the time. To me, that's crazy unless you are using it almost constantly or something.

As an aside, if you're interested in saving energy or finding out how much power your gear draws while off, there's an excellent device called the P3 Kill-a-Watt that will tell you. You put it in the socket and then plug a device into it, and it tells you how much power it's drawing (whether it's on or off). [/end off topic aside]

How many watts does your Gungnir take when off, but plugged in? Just curious.

Unfortunately I can't tell you as I no longer own the device (I used it for other purposes and sold it when I no longer needed it). That said, it wouldn't matter for me -- I would leave the Gungnir on regardless of how much power it uses, as Mike Moffat recommends. I do turn off my Mjolnir because it uses more power and heats up the room.

How about the Wyrd? Do you leave that on all the time or turn it off?

My Wyrds are always on, though I doubt it matters. But they don't use much power anyway.

The Wyrd AC power supply itself uses 2w, even if the Wyrd is off. I will measure the Gungnir when I receive it.

I am pretty new to the hobby and have yet to jump down the DAC rabbit hole.

Right now I've got Alpha Primes and Ethers, waiting for the Cavalli Carbon to arrive.

Would the multibit Gungnir gives a significant SQ boost over the AK120II, which is how I'll be feeding the LC?

Thanks for any input.

Given the performance potential of those headphones, the MBG would be a perfect fit. Do not hesitate...

Careful with MattTCG, he's an enabler. Your LC should sound great from the AK. It will probably sound better with the MBG.

While the AK DAC isn't bad, it's not really on the same level as the Gungnir Multibit (if nothing else, simply because it's D-S vs R2R).  And with headphones as resolving as the Ether, you'll really appreciate the added benefit of the GMB I think.

Was everything from the show related to balanced products?
