Hello all,

I've just started having a strange problem with my Emu 1212M. I got back from a 17 day vacation to Deutschland, and now whenever I play music, every once and a while I get a highpitched squealing sound that lasts for anywhere from .5 to 2 seconds. This seems to happen most of the time when I'm putting my computer under heavy load, like ripping CD's, but I'm not positive.

I know that my roommates were using my PC, but I checked my settings and nothing seems to be changed really, so I don't really know. I don't really want to reformat before I'm postive that I can't fix this easily.

For playback, I'm using foobar2000 with ASIO out, 24bit padded to 32bit, ASIO set to time critical, but I've fooled with all the various settings for ASIO, trying to get it to work. Anyways, if any of you have an idea, I'd appreciate it!

Are you absolutely sure it's from your 1212m? It sounds to me like your PSU is starting to overload (they make high pitched whines before they blow(el-cheapo brands)/shutdown(good brands)).

No, it's definitely the sound card causing it. When it happens, the music stops and a 95dB blast of high frequency is all the sound that I get =[ Then, after it's done, it keeps playing like nothing happened. FYI, I've got an Antec Trueblue 480W PSU, so even with my 4 HDD's, I've got more power than I need.

Change the PCI latency to 64 or higher and see what you get.
I had the same problem..... for a second.

increase buffer size under OUTPUT/ASIO (dll version) to something like 10.

now try again. hope that helps.

Thanks for the tip about increasing PCI latency, and the article, X and Radar. I'll try that out when I get home, and see what sort of results that I can get. Adhoc: I've fooled with the ASIO buffer and set it to all sorts of different values, and I've not yet had any luck.

One thing I have noticed is that the problem manifests itself most when I'm heavily accessing my HDD's, like if I copy a half-gig FLAC file or something. Other than that, I haven't noticed much of a correlation.

Thanks for the help! I'll let you know what I find out.

oh dear. that was the exact same problem with my system - though setting the ASIO buffer to 10 solved it. ymmv though - my basic system specs are p4 2.53ghz, 512mb ram, 2x80gb hdds.
