Marshall London - Audiophile smartphone

Found link to an unboxing video of the London on Marshall's page. Guess that (and the Marshall amp in the background) makes it official? but the guy doing it looks like some homeless dude (nothing funny about homelessness but this is one of the worst unboxings I've seen). Even has a skeleton of his deceased dog behind him and apparently a dead battery since he never actually turned the London on.

He has a puny beard and you think he's homeless?  Really?  Where do you live, the 1950s?

Here's a slightly better video/interview where they actually show the IPS/Gorilla Glass 3 screen plus we get to hear the speakers (at about the halfway point) and see the EQ:

The screen looks impressive and the outer casing looks pretty durable. Some of the expense definitely went into the exterior. Lets hope the rest went into the internal sound.

Marshall rep in the video says the release date in Sweden is August 21 and that other parts of the world may not get it (officially at least) until Q1 or Q2 next year.

Yes it should certainly appeal to musicians.

If this makes enough of an impression to warrant a follow-up, there might be some real opportunities for improvement (balanced out certainly seems to be on the to-do list, better hardware, etc). Either way, an interesting concept, would like to see it do well just to have another option for better audio for the "masses", ie people who aren't on Headfi :p

Currently only Sony has the presence in the smartphone and premium DAP spaces to make a truly converged, high-end product that combines both. Don't see that happening though, doubt there'd be a market for it.

True, but it should provide more power to the headphones and the extra ground should help separation like on the psuedo-balanced Sony ZX2. I want full balanced too but never thought I'd even see this on a phone device. I agree, we probably won't see a device like this with all TOTL stuff because of too high price then low demand.

My main concern is I hope the EQ doesn't veil the sound and isn't too intrusive when only changing the balance. Can't wait to try it compared to my Pono player balanced and see how the London fares.

It is hardly acceptable. I mean, it will not be top tier audio, neither top tier smartphone, and is neither cheap. You can have an Alcatel idol 3 5.5" with better hardware and software, better DAC, and better amplification at 250$.... I sometimes ask myself why are companies still producing smartphones smaller than 5"..

Hello? You're not alone dude. Other people also have preferences. I often ask myself why they don't produce 4 inch screens anymore, because those are much more practical to me than 5 inches. I like using my smartphone with only one hand, and reaching the topleft corner of my 5" Samsung S4 while keeping a steady hold is Mission Impossible to me. I have to partially release it to reach that part of the screen with my thumb.

Made in the Uk, don't be silly, we don't make a lot. They just gave it the "London" name like a brand. Come to think if it thats probably why its "Marshall" as well. Double brand name gimmickry dreamed up by marketing suits.
