Hello everyone, first of all nice to meet you and be part of your community.

I have a question for you, currently I have an ODAC + Airmotiv 4 on my desktop and really love that set up, but I would like to expand "to a next level" without breaking the bank, so I was wondering what would be better, to just get a subwoofer for my airmotivs 4 or to get a pair or 5s or F5, what would you suggest?

Also, I would like to know what would be the best way to connect the subwoofer to the DAC so i can have the speakers and sub on it.

Thanks in advance!

If you want more/better bass, get an SVS SB-1000 or PB-1000. The PB-1000 has more power and deeper extension, but it's a lot bigger. So the SVS-1000 is easier for some people to place in their setups. SVS has a 45 day in home demo. If you don't like their sub, you can return it and they will pay return shipping: http://www.svsound.com/support/bill-of-rights

With the SVS subs, you either

(a) Split the signal coming from the ODAC and run it to both the speakers and sub. Then you would set the low pass filter on the back of the sub to the where your speakers roll off in bass (my "guess" is maybe 60hz based on specs?)--so it will mainly just extend how deep in bass your speakers go.

(b) Run the ODAC to the sub, and the use the line out on your speakers. That will take advantage of the built in 80hz high pass filter, so you would be letting the sub take over a bit more of the mid bass range in this instance. Then set the low pass filter dial on the back of the sub to 80hz. Based on my experience with the Airmotiv 4 (not 4s), I think that this is the best way to go.

Note that most cheaper subs don't have option (b). Some will be able to do option (a) as long as you get one with dual RCA inputs instead of just a single LFE RCA input (intended for audio/video receivers). If you just want a small sub for desktop use that is cheaper and has option (a), the Outlaw Audio M8 is a very good sub: http://www.outlawaudio.com/products/m8.html

If you are handy, this subwoofer kit from Parts Express would be better than the Outlaw M8: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-t1004k-10-titanic-mk-4-subwoofer-kit--300-760. Note that the line outs on that amp do not have any high pass filter. So you would still set the low pass filter dial to the low end roll off of your speakers.

This Monoprice sub-woofer ($220) will work with your powered studio monitors (Airmotiv 4)
http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=115&cp_id=11504&cs_id=1150401&p_id=605999&seq=1&format=2.
Just run the analog audio cable from the ODAC (1/8" or RCA?) to the sub-woofer (1/4" Mono) and then run analog audio cables from the sub-woofer (1/4" mono) to the studio monitors (RCA).
