Cayin N5 DAP - Product Info (Post #2), Resources (Post #3) and Discussion

The "magic" of N6 DAP sound comes from it's amp section.  For sure, it's too powerful now (in N6) so could be scaled down which also helps with a battery life, but I would try to keep a similar sound sig.  I have a feeling, just a pure speculation, that N5 will be scaled down to a single DAC, so amp compensation and a proper architecture to keep soundstage width is important.  At the same time, with reduction in amp power, I would keep LO to give an option for a stack up with a more powerful amp (like C5).

Agree. The new ALO Rx is now my favourite amp for IEM. Don't always need giant power for giant sound!

1. a less powerful amp, c/iem only, might allow for a smaller form factor while maintaining sq.

2. no coax out or line out.  a pure c/iem dap.

put all the money into the dac/dacs and a quality but lower power amp.

Just what I was thinking

My suggestions - lose the porthole look to make the device sleeker and more pocketable, rejigger the buttons to spread them out a bit for easier blind navigation, and keep the jog dial!

Man, I just love jog dials - holdover from my minidisc days :L3000:

Perhaps Thomas can confirm, but I was under impression that N5 design is frozen.  So I'm not sure if our suggestions are more like a guessing game of what Cayin already put together?

I would say KEEP the Digital Out. Many people like a sleek portable player when out and about, but still attach to Hugo or similar, or even hifi when at home.

I know we all have different preferences, but the porthole look gives Cayin an identity. Seems such a shame to me, the Fiio X7 has gone sleek and bland after a striking first design. Do we want every player to look the same, probably like the AK Junior?

After looking at a string of recent releases by Cayin, all I can say is that Cayin has really brave designers, so I dont think N5 will be plain in design

Who knows what they may come up with?

Looking forward to what surprise Cayin has in store!

Exactly! I'm sure Cayin can make it their own unique design while making it more pocketable. Look at the C5. It's basically a normal rectangular amp, but the Cayin design team definitely put their stamp on it :)

I wonder if Cayin will keep the kitchen appliances theme, like they did with the dish washer N6 appearance.

Different looks get people's attention

Plus I can't count how many PMs I got with people asking me "does it has a round or a square display?"

A lot of DAPs have their interpretive "theme" lol!!!  This was a pic from my last year's X1 review:

Haha, I'm all for being creative!

Btw I am actually very interested what Cayin can bring to the table on this, it'll perfect addition to the Dap market, if they can slot in somewhere between DX50 and X3II prices.
