Audio-Technica ATH-R70x - In-Depth Review & Impressions

OK, how would the r70x compare with dt880 or he500 in terms of bass/treble extension?

If you can make it to the Calgary meet on the 15th, I'll have my R70x there. Don't have dt880 or he500 on the guest list yet, but there'll be a bunch of other cans to compare with for sure.

Just bought these and received these yesterday. Honestly, I don't feel like I have anything to add to the discussion; I wont be doing a long review. Long story short: if you're thinking about buying these, buy them. Now. Just splurge and do it. If you aren't thinking about buying these (and buying something else instead), buy these. You won't regret it.

This headphone has ended my headphone journey. They're that good. I honestly feel like there isn't room for improvement from a realistic standpoint. I have no desire to buy more headphones; these do everything I've ever wanted headphones to do, and surpass that expectation.

The "ideal" audio traducer in hi-fi, regardless of type (speaker/headphone/iem/ect.), has always had the goal of re-creating the original event and allow for the creation of an auditory illusion of a live performance. All headphones and speakers in my past experience have always sounded like headphones. All speakers in my past experience have always sounded like speakers. You can tell that it is a recording; not a live event; you're listening to headphones or speakers. The ATH-R70x on recordings without artificial instruments or sounds, sounds live. I don't know any other way to describe it. Its so good that it actually lead me to listen to music that I had no interest in listening to before, just because I was in awe on how they sounded like I was actually at a live concert. So far the best songs I've found to demonstrate this on the ATH-R70x is Pink Floyd- Mother and Pink Floyd- High Hopes.

I really don't know how they do it. Everything is just so natural. With other headphones the soundstage is always too large or too small; frequency response always has dips and peaks which aren't natural. With the ATH-R70x everything just sounds like it "should". Its weird because there isn't another way to put it. The soundstage isnt "large" or "small" or "congested" or "artificially large", it's just natural- just like how things would sound in real life. The same thing could be written about the frequency response.

So now I have to figure out what to do with all my previous headphones- DT990 600Ohm, AKG K7xx, KSC75, V-Moda XS'. I think I'll give them all alway except the K7xx, and I'm only keeping them as a collectors item.

My headphone search is done. My wallet is finally happy.

Spot on mate. Spot on. The R70X coordinates the presentation of every spectrum in surprising ways that is making me thinking it should be all about the music as is.  Not about how analytically detailed it should be. Neither upfront or too laidback.

After ten years on and off this hobby the R70X pretty much showed me those "this is it" moments at a reasonable pricing in my opinion. Having owned the electrostatics Koss 950s pretty much "had-it" for me.

I have begun the process of downsizing my entire setup and I have sold (there are more still pending for sale but I cannot advertise):

Stello DAC 100 Signature
Lehmann Black Cube Linear
Audio Technica W5000 (yes, THE wooden W5000)
Alessandro MS Pro (yes, 3x the pricetag of R70X)

Having parted away from so many equipment - the R70X was simply the reason why (well besides from my other personal financials too unfortunately) - changed the way I listen.  The only thing that could perhaps subjectively beats the R70X is the Koss ESP950. But you'd have to spend 5x the amount of the R70X to get there and it's not even an upgrade. More like a sidegrade in terms of refinement.

Agree with Xaborus and Tomkat85. It is the best value and sound from R70X. I had heard some detail which I had not heard from other iem or headphone. Some headphone has high treble which sound piercing to my ear. Having attend to live music and concert, i never encounter music instruments or speakers from concert that is ear piercing and R70X is the headphone that sound so natural that it is like listening to live music or concert. I had NAD HP50 which is also very good but R70X is even better. From my search of headphone, price is not equivalent to sound quality. Therefore, I find R70X is good value to have such a natural sound that you do not find fatigue for long listening and you will enjoy the music instead. If high end heapdhone has such a sound like R70X, it will price like $3000 plus value to my own opinion.

Hi guys, I just bought the R70X yesterday. I had been looking for a flat tuning headphone for a period and almost going to buy LCD2.2 luckily patience had pay off to find this nice headphone.

Currently, I am pairing it with chord hugo and had also read about mojo. I wonder anyone had the comparison between hugo and mojo with this r70x? My hugo is mainly for my hifi system but since it is small enough to bring out so I use it but the size of mojo is better. I had tried mojo before but not with this r70x and find the mojo sound is equally good as hugo. But I would like some opinion on comparison between hugo and mojo with r70x. Btw, anyone know the minimum power needed by r70x as i had to set quite high volume even using chord hugo so i think r70x is very power hungry.

Can't compare it with Hugo, but I've just acquired Mojo and it drives R70x satisfactory enough on turquoise color for both balls (the color indicates volume level, so not sure how high the gain is). The bass doesn't slam as hard as with Capella but other frequencies are just as good, and don't sound like it's not properly driven. For its size, quite an achievement for Mojo. :D

Thanks! Sodesuka. It is really tempting to get it. Just got the hugo about a month plus now this mojo came out. Quite frustrated a bit but my main purpose for hugo is for my hifi system which did makes my system sound better in treble portion else I will be even more frustrated. For portability, mojo is better and if sound and power is same then mojo is really attractive. Chord hugo price may drop as people will likely get the mojo than hugo. Can mojo be a dac for my hifi system using rca and sound as good as hugo? If yes, I may consider selling my hugo and get mojo then.

Just recieved my replacement cable front Lunashops. There's something messed with pins because when I plug them fully there's only one channel, the other one appears when I pull it a little bit out.

Yeah, I think some user a few pages back had the exact same issue as you. Shame there aren't any other 3rd party cables. :frowning2:

After searching headphones for months, as my hearing has moderate loss and do wear aid but could be fine listening to closed back headphone without aid. ATH-R70x being open back mean I do need to increase louder volume to hear it or know anyone with the same condition could be fine with this headphone?

Have another question: Does R70x lacks bass response, or it depends on recording or equipment?

I listen to various genres of music, mostly are Trance, Pop, Rock, Ballad, and Female Vocals.

I found the Fidelio X2 slightly too boomy and slightly V-shaped which is not my liking.
