Fostex TH900 mods

Just for people wondering about the replacement TH-900 drivers, if you're in Europe, contact your countries Fostex distributor and they can get you a spare driver. If you're in the UK, singe unit costs 67 GBP + 7 GBP shipment. Not that bad considering they're a 1000+ GBP headphones, so even if you blow the drivers when out of warranty, it's not a disaster.

I just did the lazy-mans mod and ordered the Lawton Tune up 1 kit with angled pads (but no wood cups)

After putting it all together, I found that the kit over-corrected and over-dampened everything from highs to lows.
So I emailed Mr Lawton, and he told me:

"Hi Gary,
Try removing the acoustic foam first from the cups.  Then piece C and E.
All the pieces are removable with the exception of piece D, do not try to remove this piece as you risk removing the white paper-like material along with it."

So first, I took out the foam and put her all back together. Still over damped.
Next, I removed #C and #E, see below in pic:

After removing C and E, I have gotten back all I had lost before: it is now lively but more forgiving on the high and low ends while making the mids more plump in a good way and more detail and emotion in vocals.

I'm happy enough with it for now.

Thanks to the OP/s and contributors, great info on this forum!
(Especially the succinct info de Zolkis.)

Does anyone know the EXACT dimensions of the little plastic ring that fits under the lip of the ear pad? I'd need an exact width if someone could measure it. Thanks.

Hey folks,
I'm happy with my TH900s and partial Lawton mod. Now I want to cut the 9 foot cord in half and terminate with an 1/8 jack.
(I know how to solder and can follow instructions)

Can someone help guide me to DIY site/forum or instructions on how to do this?
thanks!!
Gary

[Or if you know a reputable and reliable modder (commercial or private business) that could do it for a reasonable price, I'm open to that to.]

Yep, he reterminated my TH900 to Balanced, and converted the 1/4 connector to a female XLR to 1/4 adapter. He does excellent work, and is easy to do business with.

Sorry if this was already asked, but have you (or anyone) tried doing this mod on the thx00's?

I'm particularly interested in the dampening part since it seems the easiest to do and with a small cost.

Any information is great, thanks

Dampening discs mod will require some good cutting, thick enough materials, and different density will effects the sounds. It is much harder to seek out the right materials. However, you can follow this EZ mods for altering and tuning your THX00 and witness what the foam discs can do. Simply rotating it and keep it in stock form

Are any of you guys who did this mod in the USA and have leftover material you can sell me?

I'd gladly share my mod details here for whoever wants to attempt (and hopefully make through) their Denon 2000/5000/7000/Fostex TH600/TH900/Massdrop x00/EMU removable cable mod...

This is the exact link for the mmcx: http://www.ebay.com/itm/290843397189?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The mmcx connector (1) fits and rests so perfectly inside the cable hole on the headphones frame. The problem, though, is that if I use the washer (2) and the nut (3) inside, the winding ring at the back of the mmcx hits the driver baffle and also interferes with the wooden cups. As a result, I had to use a less aesthetic way and that's why you can see the washer outside, along with the mmcx. The pole (4) will inevitably have to be bent almost 90 degrees so that it does not interfere with the baffle space.

I tried multiple mods (2.5mm and other stuff). This is the best you can do. The space in there is so tight for the mod, this is the only possible connector you can use, that's INSIDE the frame. All other mods will have to be done outside. Even Fostex/EMUs own mods (like on the TH610 and the future removable EMU design) are outside the FRAME mods. Well, I guess I did better than them, for now.

Also, mind you, this mod will make the jacks a bit fragile, so be more careful, and the connectors are hanging right outside and sudden bends may break/bend the mmcx male jacks or even ruin the receptors. I've got another pair coming in as standby, and maybe now I can choose from a universe of mmcx cables.

Hope this helps.

This is the link for the cable.
