FiiO X5 firmware 2.50 download and discussion

Is it just me or do others find that, after plugging the X5 into the computer USB port (in my case a Macbook Pro) It takes a long time for the 2 drives to show up? In my case a couple of minutes. All other devices show up almost instantly. I think the X5 used to be quick, but maybe it's related to the volume of data on the SD cards. I have loads more than I used to and they are big (128GB) cards.

I had observed a slow down in this process too.

I have no ideea why ti happens though, i thought that it was because i had changed the files on the cards pretty often.

And after using OTG (or more like, failing to) the device won't work as DAC until reboot?

I noticed slower drives too.

I am really disappointed by the Fiio X5.  I did not do sufficient research and missed that there is no way to output DSD files at full resolution.  I am pretty sure a user in one of the threads here said they were doing it, so I stopped my research and ordered one (which arrived today), but that user probably did not notice that the DSD files are massively down sampled to 88.1 and sound bad to me.

I was hoping to use the X5 as a transport for a Hugo and an IFi DSD Micro.  If the X5 could output DSD, it would be the best portable transport ever because sd micro is moving to 200gb cards, and they will work in the X5 according to Sandisk.  This is incredible storage - 400MB portable.  WOW!!!

PLEASE FIIO.......PLEASE PLEASE ENABLE DSD OUTPUT EITHER VIA SPDIF OR OUTPUT VIA USB (using DoP method).

Can anyone advise whether this is even possible??

It's not a good idea to cross post in multiple forums on the same site.  Head-Fi discourage it.  Just causes crossed threads.  Smae answer I gave in the X5 thread:

Probably the reason that a lot of the early reviews didn't mention it is because at first instance the X5 didn't support DSD at all - it was enabled by later firmware. And you're right, it isn't native - but it still works really well over PCM.  I also agree that Fiio could make this more apparent on their website.

Secondly - I'd suggest you take any DSD track, re-sample it to 24/88.2 - heck even redbook, and then volume match and abx.  Here's a how-to (http://www.head-fi.org/t/655879/setting-up-an-abx-test-simple-guide-to-ripping-tagging-transcoding).  It doesn't cover DSD but principles are the same. I'd be willing to bet that if you blind test - you won't tell the difference.  The good thing is that once you do the test - then you start realising that the pursuit of better music is the mastering - not the format.

If you simply must have native DSD - my understanding is that none of the Fiio range is going to suit you (if you're trying to pass a digital signal to the IDSD).  My understanding is that none of them will pass DoP over SPDIF, and the USB is only there for charging and file transfer.

BTW - I have the micro iDSD, and the X3ii which does DSD natively - and it doesn't work (over SPDIF).  So the X5ii is unlikely to either.

May I ask you why?

I understand that high resolutions sound better, but why not use pcm?

With respect, you are encouraging him to continue posting in the wrong thread by answering it.  This thread is for the new 2.50 firmware as I believe you already know
See previous posts just before yours

Sorry!

I thought that it might be more firmware related, as i think that it might change with a later firmware update? (hopefull thinking

I just got a Fiio x5 recently and I love it so far!
This firmware seems to really have improved a lot from the previous versions (as far as I can tell.)

My only hopes are for the addition of fast scrolling (my music library is massive and it takes forever,) and support for embedded lyrics would be nice as well. Making external lyrics for over 10000 songs just isn't plausible. Not a hug issue though, just a suggestion. This thing is awesome!

Welcome to Headfi & the FiiO X5 club!  Have you tried any of the custom firmware mods yet?  They are exceptional and give the X5 a whole new look any time you like.
Try putting your files in many separate folders till the firmware folk at FiiO give us better search and scrolling options.

I just received my X5 a couple of days ago. First thing I did was update to 2.50. After, I loaded my songs and tried to make playlists using Dapper. Only 4 playlists made it over. I kept getting a message stating there were too many errors. A lot of my songs were in a compilation folder in iTunes and that may have been the problem. Today, I went into all Dapper playlists and made all songs the same genre in the playlists, calling the genre the playlist names. I then clicked on sort songs by genre in Dapper, re-synced, and voila, all playlists show up on the X5 as folders. Genre is key. Many of my songs didn't even have a genre selected. Now I have an X5 that looks like my iPod classic interface wise.

For the ultimate in X5 Classic try the X5 Classic theme from the custom mods thread.

I'm planning to buy a x5 and I care about the battery life. How does it last with the last firmware?

10-12 hours if run alone - If this is how you are going to use it, it would be better to not consume this time to perserve battery life. For example, I charge it often to not consume the battery life, and persrve itself as a device.

18-20 hours if run as line out to an external amp

28-30 hours if run as coaux out.
