DUNU DN-2000J -- More Than Evolution?

May 26, 2015 at 6:47 AM Post #362 of 2,123
I feel compelled to drop measurements of the DN-2000J in here, but we're trying to verify a technical issue and a second unit is on its way.

Don't want to give too much away, but let's just say that nothing I've been saying all along (since December) has changed.

It's ALIVE :D

Bit torn between this and R2Pro.

A DUNU DN-2000J/AKG K3003 comparison would be highly interesting!

Thanks to Tom for making me aware of these and thanks for the Penon Audio Link!

I've already ordered a pair and am very much looking forward to comparing it to my K3003. However, this will take some time, as I'm currently on vacation.

I've revamped the OP to reflect current understanding of the DN-2000J, added an impressions/review list for the write-ups that will be pouring in over the next few weeks, and have done my own synopsis of the DN-2000J. My lengthy review with measurements analyses will be published in CYMBACAVUM, but the current review on head-fi will be an evolving write-up, and will reflect the specific attentions of the head-fier.

Synopsis (by @tomscy2000)

The DN-2000J is a classically U-shaped earphone, with a sound signature that sounds most similar to a mixture between the AKG K3003 with Reference filters and High Boost filters, tending toward an analytical, detail-filled, and exacting nature. DUNU has long professed a desire to create an earphone that matches or outperforms the K3003, and has released a couple of well-regarded and affordable hybrid IEMs in the DN-1000 and DN-2000 over the last couple of years.

With the DN-2000J, originally created for the Japanese market as a more peppy and more petite version of the DN-2000, they've managed to create their best hybrid earphone yet, and manages to emulate the essence of its target AKG K3003 while preserving its unique identity and lineage from the DN-2000.

Perhaps owing to its custom-spec TWFK driver, the AKG K3003 manages to take the edge off some of the harshness in the treble region a little better than does the DN-2000J, but the DN-2000J comes close to the K3003 in spite of the price difference. Harshness between 8.5-10 kHz is controlled in the retail version over the prototypes, but can still be grating to treble-sensitive individuals, especially with silicone tips. Due to the slightly less refined nature of the DN-2000J's treble, Comply foam tips such as the included Ts-500 are recommended for long-term listening. However, as individual preferences vary, users will need to experiment between different tips to find their most preferred sonic experience.

The DN-2000J possesses very slightly more warmth but yet is very slightly less forward in presentation for the midrange than is the K3003. The two are remarkably similar in this area, however, and possess a similar degree of forward projection for vocals. Thus, potential buyers should be aware that the DN-2000J is not an especially intimate IEM, but is rather neutrally-positioned in sound space --- neither forward nor overtly laid-back. Its U-shaped nature does implicitly mean that the bass and treble will ever so slightly sit ever so proud of the midrange, making the DN-2000J most suitable for low-volume, Fletcher-Munson compensated listening.

In terms of bass performance, while there is some natural bass roll-off, the DN-2000J possesses some of the most capable, naturally-textured, yet extremely well-controlled bass response around. Apropos this writer's opinion, the DN-2000J's bass performance is top-tier amongst universal IEMs, able to go toe-to-toe with products like the Shure SE846, Sony XBA-Z5, and others --- and managing to outstrip its role model, the K3003, in performance.

With this kind of performance, the DN-2000J is a clear winner at $349 USD --- it improves on the performance of its predecessor the DN-2000 (itself a well-regarded IEM), and is of the top tier for sound quality in universal IEMs. Its weaknesses are predicated largely upon its reliance on the polarizing TWFK driver for the mids and highs, as well as its general sound signature tending toward the analytical. Individuals looking for this type of sound, however, will be delighted by the DN-2000J. DUNU deserves a resounding round of applause for a job well done.

Absolutely superb impression there mate, I totally agree with you, however, whilst I have yet to experience K3003, I would say that the treble control here is better than one of the highly regarded hybrid out here, the Tralucent 1 Plus 2, as I am currently loaning out my 1Plus2 to other member with the potential of buying, I had a quick A/B between 1P2 and 2000J, and one area that 2000J excelled is the treble control, to my ear, it is better than 1P2, and to note that my 2000J has only done 3-4 hours of usage at that point.

Using foam tips certainly help for treble sensitive user, though personally, I found that foam (comply) tips mask some of the details, and alters the signature to be closer to Fidue A83. Silicone is the way to go, as this thing really, seriously outputs the most incredible amount of details - I would be doing some detailed comparison here with it's closest competitor, the A83, in my review

What Dunu has manufactured here is nothing short of amazing, had this released 18-24 months ago, they could slap a $700+ price tag and could easily sell

One of HF's own expert, @H20Fidelity should have his unit in the next 1-2 days, so let see what he has to say, and I believe he also has the original DN-2000 with him so he will be able to compare both of them, but personally, this unit is taking my breath away...

Yes, I agree --- it's been a while since I last heard the 1Plus2, but I do believe the 2000J is better tempered than the 1Plus2 in the treble. The 2000J still possesses a green damper, which will smooth out peaks. To my recollection, the 1Plus2 doesn't use any dampers (unless it was internally Type I damped, which is possible).

The Ts-500 do the job for me. The other tips occlude too much, but the Ts-500 attenuate the final 9k peak enough such that the treble extension isn't masked away. Cymbal decays and other percussion (or synth) with lots of upper treble energy sound more natural that way.

Yes, and I think the more appropriate question is, what is NOT included?
bigsmile_face.gif

All up about 10+ pairs of silicone tips, 3 pairs of comply 500 foam tips (T, Tx, Ts), Dunu ring spacers (3 colours, 2 pairs of each), bass ring, rubber wings, ear guides, etc etc etc...
