DUNU DN-2000J -- More Than Evolution?

Vivian was going to include a pair so I could A/B - but they didn't arrive.  I know H20 has Vic's pair (and my original DN-1000), so he should be able to do a comparison with all 3.

Only had a brief listen so far - but I genuinely like what I'm hearing.  Even though I don't believe in burn-in, Vivian suggest 100+ hours (advised by their engineers), so I'll give them 48.  If no audible changes by then, I'll be able to give some impressions.

Probably better follow their recommendation for 100 hours, rather than 48 hours without any significant changes.

  1. If you buy the DN-2000J, be careful with the front grille; the wiring of its pores are thin and easily catch cerumen (a.k.a. ear wax) on them, so clean them religiously lest you want a layer of ear wax building up on them. Use a gentle touch when cleaning though, as the wiring isn't super stiff --- all the more reason to clean after each use, before the ear wax hardens.

Are the included Comply tips not the ones with wax guards? If not do you think they would help the earwax issue?

Yes, they include one pair of Tx-500, which do have wax guards. However, I prefer using the Ts-500 for their fit. Comply recently released the Tsx-500, but it is not included with the DN-2000J. But yes, any tips with wax guards will help with preventing earwax from building up on the grille. It's not a big deal --- I'm just letting people know that (lest they use the Comply foams with wax guards) they should be aware cleaning their grilles after each use. Also keep in mind that while the Comply Tx/Tsx series do protect from wax buildup on the earphones themselves, they're not easy to "clean", so if wax builds up on these tips, people should be switching out to new tips.

Found a Chinese (Simplified) write-up of the differences between the final retail version and prototype version of the DN-2000J, along with a comparison to the XBA-Z5: http://wtoutiao.com/p/d83Gtf.html

While my thoughts somewhat align with this person's, I won't go so far as to say that the final DN-2000J is "much improved" in transparency over the prototype --- this person claims that the final version of the DN-2000J is a big step up in transparency and naturalness. I'd probably decline to be so strong about this aspect of the sound; it is better, undoubtedly, however.

I was considering grabbing a pair of Fidue A83 to go with my new X3 2nd gen,  think i'll wait and see how these turn out first though
Looking forward to hearing how they compare

I'm loving my Fiio X3 2nd gen with DUNU DN-2000 !!!

Really impressive 3D holographic sound with absolutely lively and natural tonality!

Looking forward to try DN-2000J.

The X3 is great,  really good sound quality.  I'm using it with a pair of Audiofly AF140, they aren't bad by any means but there is just something missing from them.  I can't put my finger on what it is,  but I want to change them for something different. Currently it is a toss up between the A83 and the 2000J,  just waiting for reviews and comparisons before pulling the trigger

Tried the Tx-500 foams with the DN-2000J; the wax guard definitely makes everything noticeably smoother and slightly warmer, even compared to the Ts-500. This is the combination to try for people who prefer smoother treble. I think it gets smoothed out to the point where most people will accept it. It does add that little tiny bit more of a veil, so keep that in mind whenever you use the Tx-500 (or Tsx-500, if you buy those on your own) tips.

For your personal preference then will you be sticking with the foam / guard tips?

I think I'm more for the thrilling heat of the ride. Also, how are you finding them with hiss? DN-2000 didn't mind a little hiss.

Actually, you have both, which one hisses more (if you can detect any) This is quite important as I could not use DN-2000 with Shozy Alien due to this.

Not the Tx/Tsx foam tips... they start taking away the character of the DN-2000J. The non-'x' versions still manage to preserve the bell-like clarity, while taming some of the bigger peaks. For super-low volume listening, I actually prefer using the silicone tips.

On the scale of 1-10 in terms of treble "hotness", if the Ultrasone IQ were a 10 and the Aurisonics Rockets were a 2, the Audio-Technica CK100PRO would be a 7.5 and the prototype would've been a 6.5. The retail version with silicone tips would be 5 or below, which foam tips, 4.25, and with 'x' foam tips, 3. Just some handwavy numbers for you to refer to...

I don't have both the DN-2000 and the DN-2000J, and didn't get to compare the two for hiss when I listened, but the 2000J does pick up hiss (on devices that usually don't give off hiss --- that's how sensitive to hiss it is), and it should be at least as much if not more than the DN-2000. The Shozy Alien would be almost surely unusable with the DN-2000J. But that's the Alien's problem, methinks.

Yup, 2000 seemed to hiss a little with both DX50 and C3 though neglectable amounts when music was playing. Alien however, was not useful for me.

I can relate to the Rockets treble, a 5 or especially under is not bad for my preference.

Well, the IQ really should be moved to 11 and the rest also moved up by 1, except for the Rockets.

Keep in mind that I mostly test between 4-5 volume clicks on the iPhone, and that volume is already loud enough to mostly drown out the drone of a Shinkansen 700T train cabin.

From those figures that would estimate T-Peos H-300 at about 25. Considered the absolute danger zone.

but the transparency is 'awesome' :p
