hi guys, brand new here. i am a complete noob fyi and looking for some recommendations.

i just started getting into the audiophile world. i bought the audio technica ath-m50x because they were praised everywhere. i tried them out and of course they were better than anything i ever owned before. when i started reading more and more, i found out theyre not  all that great. after using them for a few weeks, im not all that impressed. im going to return them to amazon and get $150 back. i started looking at all the different pages and reviews and to be honest, its overwhelming and contradicting. certain reviews will say how some headphones are really bassy and then another post will say how there is no bass at all. same goes for mids, highs, soundstage etc. of course everyone hears differently but its too much for me haha

in any case, i looked on amazon and narrowed down some possible alternatives but please recommend something different if you want. i mostly listen to trance, techno, that kind of stuff. dont need anything with crazy bass but i do want to hear it. i can always get an amp so dont be afraid to list some higher ohm headphones if you feel like they are good.

they need to be:

$150 - $250
closed back
over ear

Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO - 250 ohms - $210
Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO - 80 ohms - $260
AKG K550 - 32 ohms - $200
AKG K545 - 32 ohms - $250
Shure SRH840 - 44 ohms - $200
Sennheiser Momentum - 18 ohms - $185
Audio-Technica ATH-A900X - 42 ohms - $170

if any of the above are not good, please tell me why so i can take them off the list

thanks :)

I see you're really taking into account the opinion of others, but more importantly what don't you like about the M50X?  I see you're considering the HD 598 but you're also against open back headphones - is there any particular reason as to why you're against open back?  Trying the HD 598 and possibly returning it is a great idea, since it's totally different than the M50X and will give us a better idea of what you're looking for.

i dont think the m50x sound that amazing as some people say. also, i have to constantly readjust them and theyre not that comfortable. few things here and there.

as far as open back, im not against them but if im listening to music or gaming at night, i dont want people to hear me. also, if i do take them in public, i dont want people to hear me as well as me hear them.

the 598 are really nice in terms of looks, 50 ohms which wouldnt necessarily need an amp, and reviews seem really good as well. i might try those but the open back is probably gonna be a deal breaker

It appears that you have not done any reviews with your own ears and are apparently shooting in the dark.  Further, you haven't specified what about the M50X you hear as deficient or lacking.  Find a shop or two in your area (a Head-Fi meet is even better); bring your own music and player; and try as many of the cans as you are able.  Once you have done this and have some reference points, tell us:

What equipment will be feeding and powering these cans?  Will you be using an amp?

What is the format of your music and other sounds will you be putting into these cans?

Describe the sound signature that you are seeking?

Do you plan to use them outside your home?  If so, in what way & with what equipment?

Headphone comfort is a very individual thing.  Sizing and sensitivities are unique to each person.  We can point you to headphones that are generally considered to be comfortable and mention others that have garnered complaints for being uncomfortable.  However, the only way to know for sure is to wear them yourself for a time equivalent to your longest listening session.

Since you can't yet describe the sound signature you prefer, just a bit warmer than neutral might be a good place to start--and to take a look at these which are currently selling for $100 off their usual $250 price:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B44N0D

and for the same price--
