ps1000 vs ps1000e in terms of sound?
Mar 10, 2015 at 4:56 PM Post #2 of 10
I have just sold my PS1000's and bought the e's without prior audition - i'm not proud...i'm lazy). First impression on differences after reasonable burn in time on the e's:

The e's have, less mid bass but much better bass texture/detail, no 'nasties' at the top end to make you wince, cymbals don't sound splashy and ill defined, the soundstage is not as close or high or wide, mids are not recessed,  more resolution. I am hearing things I never heard on the PS1000's, and the e's are louder at the same volume dial.

What do I miss about the PS1000's? The mid bass and the soundstage being in your 'face'!!! I listen to heavy metal and they reproduce guitars and drums with power and impact the e's don't.

So, which is better? Perhaps neither, I realise I may need both.

I agree that the "e"s have less of a mid bass hump and less harsh treble...that's why I love them so much. The mid-bass on the PS1000s could bleed into the mids and the treble could (with brighter recordings) become tiresome. But I prefer a more balanced sound signature (my favourite headphones are the SR-009/SR-007Mk1/LCD-X/HD800s. I've been waiting for years for John Grado to come out with a more balanced pair of headphones...and thankfully the PS1000e's are that. BUT (and this is a big but), they have not sacrificed the Grado house sound that we've come to love (I feel the PS500/500e/RS1e have sacrificed too much of the house sound IMO).

But if you're looking for a more "U" shaped sound that can be considered fun by some, then maybe the PS1000s are for you?

Oh yeah, I listen to mostly rock, hard rock, metal and jazz.

Purchased Bryston BHA-1 to drive my PS1000e. Grado themselves recommended to me and a dealer said they used it to develop the PS1000 (i presume PS1000e too). So far so very very good I no longer miss the bass on the PS1000. Now I wanna try my old pair (sold) on this amp! Doh!

Now I know why I often feelt like I disagreed with you, when in reality it wasn't the case. It's because of the terms that you use. You see, what I got from your first phrase, is that both the PS1k and the e, have a harsh sounding treble, and a mid bass hump, but the e's treble, and mid bass hump, but the effect is less obvious with the e, than it is with the old PS1k.

I would say that the e have less mid bass presence, wich gives them a more balanced sound, and the e's treble is also more polite, wich makes them more forgiving wich can be a very good thing, with brighter recordings.

I have also noticed that we listen to different kinds of music, I like pretty much every style of music, exept, Rap, Hip Hop, Metal, and Hard Rock, so this might explain our different opinions.

Also, I'm sure that I'm not telling you anythig that you don't already know, when I say that younger people are more ''sensitive'' to high frequencys, I don't know your age, but I'm 94, so I'm probably less ,sensitive than you are in the higher register. Also the fact that I wear an hearing aid  must surely be another factor to consider.

Tell the truth M.H, did I had you going there for a second? Seriously though, I'm 49, and I don't wear an hearing aid.

Like I've said before, even though you prefer the e, and I prefer the old ones, we pretty much agree on everyting, it's just that we don't use the same terms, to decribe basically the same thing.

The thing is once you've used a term like ''harsh'' to describe the sound of the flagship model, once you get to the SR325, you're pretty much left with terms like, ''ice pick in the ear''.

I hope that you be offended by my post, because, like I've said, we agree on pretty much everything regarding the PS1k, and the PS1ke, we simply use different words to describe what we hear.

So, no hard feelings, buddy

Lol, not 94? I'm 43...so we're in the same range. I would say that either's treble is overly harsh...but can be with the wrong recording and I'm comparing it to my other headphones (all non-Grado's). That might be our different view points on the treble. I'm more used to "neutral" headphones.

I agree with you in terms of absolute harshness, neither are that...you know the SR325.

Never any hard feelings...it's just audio. Not like it's something important or something....

I'm glad you feel that way, because respect is very important to me. The fact that we don't see each other, makes it harder to evaluate the tone of the other person. This is why I think it's important to make proper use of the smylies.

For some people, the ''agree to disagree'' concept, is not an option. They'll never admit that they might be in the wrong.

Oh! and as I have said before, my native tongue is French, so if you, or others, notice any grammar mistakes on my part, please, don't hesitate to correct me.

That's the problem with on-line emails, chats, etc... you lose the facial expressions to get the tonality and queues to get the whole picture. I seriously think our differences in preferences here is where we're coming from. I'm mostly an HE1000/SR-009/LCD-X kinda guy...so thus my preference for the PS1000e; you're more of a "Grado fan", so the PS1000 appeals more to you as it's more in that classic vain (please correct me if I'm wrong). But I think we both agree that the differences aren't that big and they sound more alike than not. That or it's a Leaf fan vs. Habs fan thing.

I remember tearing up while I was  listening to Sofia Peterson's version of Hallelujah, with a pair of 009, so I think that this qualifies me as a Stax fan, or at least a 009 fan, not owner, but definately fan.

Oh! and I like the comparison, Leaf fan (PS1000e) vs Habs fan (PS1000), have one thing in common, they're both Hockey fans (Headphones).

That's a great version. I also really love kd Lang's version too. One great song by a great Canadian song writer (and Montrealer).
