I recently decided to get a pair of closed headphones to complement my HD-800s, and after reading all the positive reviews decided to go with the Alpha Primes.  With almost two weeks of listening to a variety of music, I have to say that, at least to me, they are not living up to the hype.  It's not that they're bad, they just lack the clarity and detail I get out of my HD-800s.

What I haven't done is put them through any particular burn-in effort, instead just listening to them when I've had the opportunity.  Some people mentioned that after a burn-in period they thought the headphones opened up.  So the question is am I giving up too early and should I hold on to them for a while longer to see if they improve or should I return them while I'm still within my 15-day return window?

Thanks for any advice and recommendations!

Burn in can fix anything, if you just believe~

It's a tough one jtunes. I'm in the exact same predicament with my HD800s and Alpha Primes.

Give the primes a couple more weeks. Even over the last three days of solid use they are starting to sound much better for me (more open & better presentation).

As a plus the missus finds them much less anti social than the HD800S as a result of the closed design which equals more tunes time for me. :)

You're setting the bar high with the HD800's and there's nothing wrong with that. IMO, burn in is not going to radically change those cans. If you have a discerning ear and continue to listen to the HD800's, I have a feeling these will never impress you.

Send em back if you don't like em.
If you don't like their sound burn in won't change anything about that, if it does anything at all.

Take the "night and day difference" or "more open" "more bass" kinda comments with a grain of salt as people are already biased toward wanting to hear an improvement.

At the end of the day, a $50 driver will still be a $50 driver.

Try that line over in any of the T50 threads....Yes, it will still be a $50 driver, but after modding it will sound like a really amazing headphone that you can't put down....figuratively and literally.

You obviously have not heard an excellently modded pair of T50's....

Have you tried Beyerdynamic T5p?
