Also, where do I check for firmware updates?

For future firmware updates, you can go to the Xuelin web site: (http://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0LEV1MEWKNUb2kAh5xXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEyMGI3ZmYzBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA2JmMQR2dGlkA1FJMDQ5XzE-/RV=2/RE=1420019844/RO=10/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.i-hifi.com%2f/RK=0/RS=b2GoJPbiGHLd1rmFK83fi5JS_Lg-).  Once you enter the site and translate (as needed), then go to "Events and News" section and this will be where they have traditionally listed firmware update information.

dedPrince and Niyologist,

I have taken a closer look at both the 770 and 770c this evening.  The latest firmware in the 770 is ihifi_v2.02; in the 770c the firmware is 770C-8718_v1.02.  I think these are virtually the same, but the 770C has a couple of extra screen displays that the 770 does not.  I guess you can put the ihifi_v2.02 on the 770C, but I don't think it will change much in terms of functionality. Regarding the back of the 770C player, mine appears to be be metal (aluminum).  Mine has the same temperature to touch as the rest of the casing, so I don't believe it is plastic.  In regards to the leather case, this does not appear to be a standard inclusion with the 770C, so, dedPrince, you appear to be the victim of a free gift....

I've just decided that I'm buying Fiio X5... just out of curiosity, I don't know if it's going to stay with me.
Anyway, I will closesly observe this topic for any further 770c reviews and comparisons and maybe then I will pick up one of 770c for testing.

Good luck LHOD.  I'll look for your impressions on the FiiO X5.  I'm still hoping that the pending iHiFi 800 will be a nice competitor for the FiiO line, so keep your eyes (and ears) out for this one as well...

HEY GUYS.  PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UPDATE THE FIRMWARE ON YOUR 770 C.  I was looking at the process today to see if it would be similar to the process for the 770.  In the process of accessing the update imager, my 770c froze up, which is not that surprising, because the same thing happened when I was using the process to update the 770.  But, after pressing the reset button on the 770c, the player will not turn back on...  I'm not sure what has happened, but do not attempt to change the firmware to the ihifi 2.02 version.  I'll email Penon Audio to see if I can get any help, but in the meantime, please leave your firmware on the 770C alone.  Thanks.

Well, the good news is I will be able to "fix" my 770C, but I will need to wait on Xuelin to send me a link for the original firmware first.  I have emailed them today with my request.  With the New Year upon us, I may have to wait several days, but at least we now know with certainty that the firmware for the 770 and 770C are not interchangeable.  So please, enjoy your 770C players as they are and don't make the same error I have made....

Happy New Year!

I'm glad that they will have a fix for your 770C. I hope the firmware updates in the future include a Custom EQ.

I've been using my 770c for quite some times and here are my continued impressions

Usability
I think this is a really important issue to address because a LOT of 770 users railed on the device for having awful controls and such. I personally think they are very easy to use and is very intuitive.

You have 6 buttons, 2 rows and 3 columns
1  2  3

The first column is the "Select" and "Go Back" button. Select is on top and Go Back is on the button. The "Select" button is also used to toggle features.
The second column is your navigation buttons. the top one navigates up or to the left and also rewinds the song. The bottom one does the opposite. Easy
The third column is your volume buttons and they also unlock your device. I found it easier to simply press the button on top of the player. The button on top also works as a play/pause button which I think is VERY convenient. Good design choice for that!

UI
The UI is not that great. Its very primitive and things must be manually organized by folder. Its functions like a USB without any features besides folders. So here is what it doesn't have

No Album Art
No Artist grouping
No Album grouping
No track # grouping
No Alphabetical grouping
No grouping
No custom equalizer
No Playlist

It does have
Folder view
TRUE repeat
shuffle
play ALL the music
Pre-set equalizer settings(more on this)
Auto on-off settings
Spectrum viewer while playing music

A lot of previous people have said that the MSEQ setting is really nice, I'm not sure about this. The MSEQ is a special(?) equalizer setting the sound based on what MSEQ setting you have. Currently, there are 3D, Bass, and LSEQ.

3D and Bass change the sound significantly while LSEQ has a smaller effect. 3D DOES make the music sound more "surround sound" and also makes the volume more sensitive, but I felt that it made the sound MUCH harsher. The Bass setting REALLY pushes up the bass. Its way too powerful for me but fortunately, there is a less overwhelming bass equalizer. So overall, there are a lot of equalizer settings for people who want them. Just no custom ones.

Two Outputs
I can't tell the difference between the holes. I'm using the SoundMAGIC HP100.

Overall Sound
Compared to my phone(this was my first DAP) the volume is much louder but I wouldn't say it is better controlled. I have very sensitive ears and listen to music around 5-10 out X range. The problem I have is that since the volume is so low, the sensitivity takes a huge dive. switching from 8 to 9 is a BIG jump for me. Then again, keep in mind I have really sensitive ears so this probably won't apply to you.

The sound itself is very nice! It gave my HP100 a much more surround sound. Instrument separation and clarity really went through the roof. I also noticed a small improvement in the sound stage but honesty which was just icing on the cake. Also keep in mind that the HP100 has reportedly seen little improvement with different sources/amp so if your headphone will probably have more improvements.

I wouldn't recommend this to casual people because of the lack of a good UI, I tend to listen to whole albums so the lack of sorting wasn't a big deal for me. I would simply go to the folder containing my album and hit shuffle/repeat all and enjoy. If that sounds like you, this is a definite go!

dedPrince,

I'm a bit confused.  Are you saying you listen to music with the volume set between 5 and 10 (out of 60)?  I typically am using the volume in the 28-30 range, so if I understand you correctly, then I can see why you don't hear much difference between the 2 HOs.  In fact, when I get below 4-5 on the volume setting, I can't hear anything at all...  One program you might find (if you use a PC to put music on your player) useful is Drivesort.  I have left posts for this program already in this thread.  The Wolfson DACs tend to arrange the files you put on your player according to time.  The most recent file you add to your player will be the last one on the list.  I use Drivesort to arrange my files in alphabetical order by artist; this is a very easy and rapid way to arrange your files, you just use Drivesort to open the drives on your player (it has 2, one for the internal and the other for the microsd card) and then you open the music file, which then lists all your artist names.  You click on sort, then save and you're done....(see post #59 in this thread for the link to Drivesort...)

Is there really no difference between the 770 and the 770C? also, does anyone here know when the 800 will be released? I am waiting on the 800 before making the jump for the 770 or the 770C.

There are differences between the 770 and the 770C.  Here is my earlier post (with some updates) detailing some of the differences:
1.  The 770c does not come with a leather case (in fact, no case at all).  However, I was able to find an inexpensive (US $4-5) case on ebay that works very well.
2.  The 770c does not have a small rubber stopper to fit in the HO that is not being used.
3.  The glass on the 770c is darker than the glass on the 770.
4.  The aluminum case on the black 770c is flat black, whereas on the 770 it is a bit shinier and has a fine stippled pattern.  But both players feel very solidly built.  I think that both players also come in Siver and Gold case options, but the vendors selling the 770c (that I am currently aware of) are only selling Black and Silver versions of the 770c, but all 3 color options for the 770.
5.  The 770c has 5 screen displays to choose from, while the 770 only has 3, otherwise the UI and menu options appear to be the same.  Neither player shows album art.  However, as I found out the hard way, the firmware for the 770c and 770 are not the same, and the firmware for the 770 does not work on the 770c.  As far as I know, the firmware link for the 770c has not been posted on the Xuelin website yet.  I have requested a link for the 770c firmware, so once I am able to get it, I will post it in this thread.  The newest firmware version for the 770 is named ihifi_v2.02, and the firmware on the 770c is 770C-8718_v1.02.
6.  The volume levels are amazingly similar between the 2 players, but I did notice that with my Westone 2 earphones, the volume number had to be set a little bit higher on the 770 compared to the 770c (33 vs 30 for the song I was listening to).  I did not experience any real volume setting differences with my other earphones.
7.  There are hardware differences between the two, but again in my experience so far, this does not translate into any significant sound quality differences.  So, if you like the sound quality of the 770, you will get the same pleasure from the 770c.  The DAC in the 770 is Wolfson 8740, in the 770c Wolfson 8718.  The earphone amplifier in the 770 is Max????, and in the 770c Max9722.  The LPF is the same for both (AD8656).
8.  The currently available vendors are selling the 770 for about US $175-185, while the 770c is selling for US $109-115.  Massdrop has featured the 770 player at least twice and the player was sold for ~US $140 (as I recall).  I wouldn't be surprised if the 770c is eventually offered on Massdrop at a lower price.

In my experience though, the 770 and 770C are the same in regards to UI, functionality, file support, and sound quality.  They are both very solid players and the sound quality is excellent.  I really like them both, but for the price, I think the 770c is the better bargain.  The 770c should be considered a top competitor for people considering players such as the Colorfly C3 and FiiO X1.  So, if you are in the market for a relatively inexpensive DAP with really good sound quality, I would highly suggest the 770c player.

The release date for the 800 model will be sometime in 2015.  Xuelin is going to be sending out the 800 model to reviewers (beta testing) sometime in January, but I haven't seen a planned date for general release.  The 800 appears to be a major change in DAP players for Xuelin, a departure from the Wolfson DAC players.  An earlier review by one of the developers (listed earlier in this thread) says the sound of the 800 is very similar to the 960 dual core player, but better.  If this is true, then the 800 ought to be a very, very nice product.  I have not seen any projected cost quotes for the 800 yet.

The earphone amplifier in the 770 is Max1907A, and in the 770c Max9722.

Thanks for the information, but this might have got garbled in transmission. the MAX1907A is a power controller for CPUs and not useful in any way as a headphone amp. Maybe they meant to refer to the MAX97220, which is an updated version of the 9722 with much lower distortion but slightly lower power.

Well, I'm not sure what to tell you, but if you look at the pictures in the first post of this thread, you can see the depictions of the chips supposedly used in the 770.  The chip you are questioning is clearly labeled Maxim 1907A.   I understand what you are saying, but if the posted information is incorrect, then I do not know what the headphone amp in the 770 is.  I would have to refer you to Xuelin directly to clarify this issue.  I'm sorry for any misinformation that my post contains, but I have used the information that Xuelin has provided.
