Title says it all. I'm looking for a good and cheap amplifier for a K701 variant. Soundstage and imaging are top priority. This won't be my daily driver, I own a Stax Lambda, but the Stax has poor imaging for gaming.

I've been looking at the Schiit Vali/Magni and the Little Dot 1+ (both of which I have either owned or demoed, and liked) but was wondering if anyone had alternate suggestions.

I used to have one, actually. I sold it to buy another piece of gear. The Magni is basically the same thing but in a nicer case and for cheaper.

Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card, used ones are going for $130.
Comes with a PCM1792A DAC chip :)
Dolby Headphone surround sound
Headphone amplifier that cam easily drive the 62-Ohm AKG KXX headphones.

Hi im also looking for an amp for my new 7xxs that came in the mail today. IM SO HAPPY. A im still in college would the aforementioned O2+ODAC combo be a good buy? Im an international student and would really love the portability that the JDS combo seems to provide. alternative recommendations are MORE than welcome. cheers!

The ODAC/O2 would be one of many good choices for use with the K7XX headphones.

The K7xx is the first hp I did not like the O2 with. I even love its pairing with the Q701 over the Lyr. I have no clue why it doesn't like the K7xx on my setup.

Hi Junyuan, what differences did you notice between the two different setups? Could you help me illustrate some of the characteristics of the O2+ODAC with the 7xx? I am currently using my 7xx straight out of an asus Gseries and am on the verge of buying an O2 but this is also my first time buying an amp and/or a dac. I am unable to go to an audio shop to try out amps as finals are next week :[

Hello,

My apologies for the delay. I will get back to you with more detailed response, hopefully by tomorrow. I usually listen to the K7xx out my Lyr, but I also really love the O2 for my headphones. Ill post back soon.

To follow up on the O2 and the K7xx:

This is the first headphone I have owned in which I did not like how the O2 sounded, including even the hard-to drive HE-500. There is no need to get into a debate about the merits of the O2, since I am a major fan. When people described it as being thin and etchy, I did not agree. But with the K7xx, I find the combination nearly unlistenable. I even prefer the Q701's from the O2 to my Lyr, but the K7xx's on the Lyr are noticeably better, to my subjective perception, in every way. Thus, if you were to ask me, I would say to try something else for the K7xx if that is your primary headphone. Perhaps the Matrix M-Stage or the Schiit Audio Vali would be better alternatives.
