SONY NW-ZX2

Thank you to all who have taken the time to provide some feedback for me, I appreciate it. It does sound like a special DAP and with the Canadian retail being the same as the US that makes it an extra incentive if you ask me. I'm most likely going to grad one, despite the lack of power. I can use my E12 if I really need to, or complete the Sony ensemble and add a PA3. I'm going to see if the local Sony Store has one in stock. The sad thing is with these products is that in a year it will seem outdated and something even more wonderful will come along. Oh well, can't let that stop me or I would never buy anything.

If I need more power, I plan to buy some cheap portable tube amp to pair with ZX2 via analog out to utilize the potential of ZX2 internal and the possibility to buy cheaper tube amp.

Audio-Technica AT-HA22TUBE Japan Import ?

The only reason I decided to get the ZX2 is that I managed to get a special pricing/preorder bundle.
The retail price in Malaysia is around $1340 (hell no), but i got it for $1005 which included a free MDR-1A headphones and 40 free high res tracks download.

I'll be selling off the MDR-1A so my purchase price for the ZX2 goes down to $830 :)

Btw, if you want to hear a significant improvement, you'll find it by upgrading your headphones more than DAPs.

I tried to see if I could go check out the ZX2 and PHA-3 in person but all the brick and mortar Sony Stores in Canada are closing down so they won't have the ZX2 although some that are still open may have the PHA-3.

1/ however you look at, a person with not enough money is just...not enough money....I can't buy a pair of shoes valued at $100.20 for $100 from the store.....and the cashier or the manager would not sell it to me....regardless of the fact that it was only 20 cents differences.....I could try and beg for it, but originally I was short of money, and originally they would not sell....this means they careless about how i can come up with that 20 cents. What are talking about here.

2/ people already buying ZX2 at twice the cost of ZX1 ? Why not ? The improvements from ZX2 to ZX1 do satisfy people, and so people would pay that much differences to buy it....they careless about that $500-700 differences.
No, you said twice it's price point referring to the ZX2, re-read your post.

3/ yes, the ak240 for $2400 is ludicrous .....but people still buy them....why ? Because they are satisfied. I am not sure how truth the quality zx2 is vs ak240....to me, even if it is 80-90% of that $2400 product, then half the cost is justified. Yes that's right you do not know then stop acting like you do. Every time somebody says anything remotely negative about this player you jump in to correct them. You sound like you're trying to convince yourself more then convince others.

Conclusion, what I want to say here is that....if you are satisfied and happy ? Then buy it. If you are neither happy nor satisfied or either one...then don't buy the ZX2. There is no point of criticizing, or justifying the cost implied by Sony on their products....Yes we know that. This is a forum, people come here to ask questions and criticize if need be, it's part of the circle process. If people don't like the price or any other aspect they are allowed to say so.

Anyways, I am going to stop on this off topic (sound quality differences from zx1-zx2 vs cost differences) So you're going to stop talking about the SQ differences between the ZX1/2, Isn't that why we're here?

I know, but I like having a well designed and well made DAP. I'm not worried about the headphones, my real critical listening is done at home. I actually like the MDR 1A well enough, they are a comfortable headphone with a really fun signature. Reference level? Nope, not even close, but still very nice sounding. I want a nice large player with a great user interface. Who knows, I might change my mind and stick with the A17 and just get a very nice amp/dac for it (that is also a solid option). I have no problem admitting this, part of my drive for products like this is that they are very nice looking and well made. I think this is likely a motivating factor for many of us here. There is a reason Apple vaulted to the dominant position they hold now when the iPods and iPads really grabbed consumer attention. They were extremely well designed (at least they became that way) and they looked very nice. Sad to admit I'm willing to pay extra money for appearance, but I know that is part of it so I might as well face it.

  1. Speak for yourself.
2. Name one other person here who would pay double Sony's current asking price.
3. Only two people that I know here have stated in their opinion that it might sound better than the Ak2400 this hardly makes for a consensus and that price of $2400 is ridiculous and unjustifiable.

Actually he is not the only one that has sampled the AK240 and found the Sony to be better, I have read at least 2 other in depth reviews that came to the same conclusion...many others said it is too close to call or comes down to sound signature preference so maybe it is a toss up?  The AK240 was the benchmark for a long time and for a small manufacturer compared to the resources at Sony, it is not a bad achievement.  I should receive my ZX2 soon and also will get the FIIO X7 and provide my impressions with the top Sony cans and JH16 Pro.

PS: Currently I also own the Ibasso DX90, FIIO X3 & X5

I used to own the AK240 months back, and i can say for certain the AK240 has a much lower noise floor than the ZX2.
As for which DAP is better; compared to IEMs, the law of diminishing returns applies to DAPs at a much lower price range. Above that is mainly on sound signature preference.

On a side note, Dignis leather case fans can rejoice knowing the ZX2 leather case will be available some time in mid April :)

I should get mine on Wednesday 3/18 and will also test it with my Jh 16s. I hope it's a nice pairing.
