Hey,

I'm looking to buy some over-ear headphones, and I'm pretty lost. I would prefer them to be not higher than $150, or at least not too much over that price. I'd probably by from Amazon.ca, which has a different selection from the American site. I might buy elsewhere if someone suggests a site.

I would prefer closed back headphones. Something that doesn't leak much sound and noise cancels. Although if the headphones are open, and are vastly better I'm open to suggestions.

I would be using them to listen to music, when watching anime, and gaming. Mostly on my laptop and phone, so something I can use without an amp.

Fan of a lot of Japanese music, and video game music, like stuff from Touhou or Rhythm games.

Thanks for the help.

I can bump, right?

I suppose if it's too much trouble for people to listen to all the songs, could someone give me some recommendations for headphones that are good for J-rock, J-pop, and more techno style music. I'm hoping they will play vocals, guitars, drums, synthetic instruments(?), piano, violin and brass instruments well, perhaps among other instruments. Maybe a slight emphasis on female vocals. I'm not sure I need to emphasize bass, but like I said before I'm not even close to being an expert on headphones.

I also don't believe I'll get to try anything before I buy them.

Edit because I don't want to bump...

I was considering the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, I've heard that they're pretty well rounded, but a bit bass heavy. How well do they hit highs and mids? Anything else I should know in specific about them? Any other similar recommendations, as I feel highs and mids may be important?

You and I share very similar music tastes; I am a fan of Bemani music and a smattering of J-Pop and 90s to 2000s J-rock. When I made a post like this in a different forum, someone pointed me to a somewhat bassy pair of cans, the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro. I unfortunately haven't tried them myself as apparently Beyerdynamic gear doesn't seem to be too popular where I live.

Thanks I'll look into the Beyerdynamics
Although those are a bit on the pricey side. If I don't find anything else I might consider getting them. Saving up more money or waiting for a deal or something.

Some other question.
I could get ATH-M50x for $165 and Amazon tells me that I'm saving $94. Are the ATH-M50x considered as good competition against $250 headphones, or do things in the $150 range give it competition when looking at quality. Is this a good deal?

Are there any alternatives headphones that are more neutral, have a better sound-stage, or more detail than M50x's for around the same price $150ish and same general quality?

Also any open ear recommendations?

I second Rackhour's recommendation on the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros, as I own them myself, and while slightly pricey, they do give you quite good sound quality unamped, especially with their 16 ohms of impedance. Other options you may wish to consider are the Grados(open-backed) or the Creative Aurvana Live 2s(closed back). Also, as for a first hand opinion on the COPs, well, all I can say is that they have served me well through my 2 years and 60 albums of Vocaloid music. Happy choosing!
