Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 Discussion Thread

I ordered up the red MSR7s on Amazon from "Import by Kobe". My value factor plummeted but I didn't want to chance missing out on the limited edition red - it's my most desired headphone color. Plus I really needed something for music, movies, COD and my ModMic now. Expedited shipping checked :)

No matter what these will be good enough for general, gaming, and portable use. Like I said, for more serious home listening I plan on buying LCD-3s. Plus JH Audio Roxannes for the gym and serious mobile listioning... eventually...

I think this is a nice triple play of headphones to cover all my temporary and permanent bases. The MSR7s should arrive between December 24th and the 30th.

Edit: I noted the MSR7's cables appear to be non locking. Should be good for upgrades and stepping on the wire but I'll miss the secure locking fit of the M50X. Then again you also lose that silly coiled cord, the 1/4th inch screw on design I most likely would never use, and gain iPhone controls!! Does the inline remote have all the next/back/enter buttons?

Imo, still good without locking, few times I mod my headphone with female oyaide, work great and secure.

Thinking to buy the red one too. I love those color, like calling my name to buy them, hahahaha

Msr7 sounded edge-ier than m50x to my ears.

MSR7 is very sensitive to pairing. Sensitive enough that different amp / player can make me dislike it or like it a lot.
Will post my review soon.

I do find the folding mechanism wrongly designed though. When u fold it, it turns the wrong way. It should be made to turn the other way, so the bottom of the earcups do not puh against each other. Comparing this design to the 1R, u can immediately see why the 1R is better designed in this aspect

this is the right way to wear it on your neck.

Get it locally here in Singapore on pre-order basis, has been with me with less than 50 hours of usage.

I had M50X before, and I would say sound signature models between these 2 quite similar with the exception that MSR7 feel more forward and bright (perhaps not burn in longer) on high.

I agree with the opinion from some people here, the source (DAP) and amplifier make a different for MSR7, which is I found it strange considering that I don't have similar situation with M50X as far as I recall.

A few unscientific test I have done with combination of iBasso DX90, Fiio X3, Macbook Pro as source with Cayin C5, Audio GD NFB15.32.

With iBasso DX90 alone, the sound bright and neutral. When combine with Cayin C5, the sound change to more forward on mid (setting on low again), quite spiking on high. Thus I stick back listening with iBasso DX90 alone.

With Fiio X3, warm as expected, but not so bright, something like a veil in the songs that I tested (same sd card use for DX90 as well).
Surprisingly, the moment I combine with Cayin C5, I found the best combination to enjoy this headphone, warm , forward and clear (not spiking high).

With MacBook Pro alone, it can be drive easily, which is not happening with other Beyer headphones I have (yay). Sound wise, quite normal, nothing so special to comment on this as compare with dedicated DAP such as iBasso and Fiio.

Best combination I got it when connecting MacBookPro to AudioGD Dac/Headamp NFB15.32, wow, very different experience, I would say the best in term of sound quality.

Again this is personally my personal experience, others can be differs.

It seems to me mixing with warm source/DAC (Fiio) and amplifier (Cayin C5, AudiGD NFB15.32), give the best combination to tame the high on this headphones (up to this time).

I will continue experiment with this combination after more burning time commenced to feel whether any different occurred.

Now listening MSR7 with AT-HA22TUBE, the more I listen the more I like it

I strongly suggest MSR7 users to try AT-HA22TUBE.  MSR7 sounds so good with HA22TUBE.
HA22TUBE bass is big and strong, mids is smooth and intimate, simply a perfect match for MSR7

That's right! M50x has higher tolerance to different amp and player, while MSR7 is much more sensitive to pairing with different amp and player. Can be good or bad, but I consider it fun

That means MSR7 sound signature is highly tweakable with different amp, and easily scales up with matching amp and player.

Totally agree, looking on positive side, i have more combination to play around to understand each songs character sound heard in the same headphones.

Definitely a keeper, as personally I am a fans of Audio Technica sound signature (especially for vocal).

My daily commute headphones for sure as it is easily drive by iBasso DX90.

Not sure if anyone's posted this (positive) review but is the first time I've seen measurements for this can http://www.digitalversus.com/headphones/audio-technica-msr-7-p22041/test.html

Voices are also clear and rich, but it all goes a bit pear-shaped above 2 KHz: at this point, the high frequency tones don't do justice to the original sound, some being overpowering, others too weak. High mids are sometimes a bit too nasal, and sibilance is unfortunately quite common. Any songs with lots of cymbals, twangy, saturated guitar or hissing vocals (i.e. "s" sounds) can become a bit much after a while.

To people who own or listened to this... Does this line up with how it sounds? Isnt the ugliest response curve.. actually quite nice up until 2k. Neutral with warm tilt, then gets kinda wonky till about 10k. Similar to the HE-400s, which I liked other than the sibilance.
