MrSpeakers Alpha PRIME: Impressions and Discussion Thread
Jan 4, 2015 at 7:50 AM Post #811 of 2,891
received my primes yesterday. at the moment I only have the hrt microstreamer to use with it (hifi m8 coming next week). when using the microstreamer with the cck on my iphone 4 it sounds really really thin. sound improves a lot when using the microstreamer on my iMac. anybody knows the reason for that? I would have expected them to sound the same. I hope the m8 will do the trick as sound is good already from the mac but I feel it could improve a lot.

A stronger signal from the computer than what you're getting from your phone? If they sound thin it's because they're underpowered (you already know this). I'd expect the m8 to improve the sound a lot.

thanks for clarifying. i hope the m8 with iphone and cck will work as good as the imac. but i will see i guess.

You don't need the camera kit with the M8 and any iOS device, it has direct support for iOS digital out via Lightning or 30-pin connectors.

IMHO the M8 happens to be a great match to the headphone, that's my personal portable setup which I enjoy a lot!

that is great to hear and i am looking forward to hear the primes with the m8. but i bought the lx version for the optical out (and it was cheaper ) so i guess the cck will be needed. or is there a direct way to connect the 30pin/lightning to usb-b or optical with the lx version of the m8?

The M8 threads will be a good place to find out, not having that model I am not sure.

The reason you might want to us the CCK is to be able to play hi-res FLAC files by using the FLAC player app. I like the M8 a lot with the Primes. Really good combo. I also use it hooked up to my Mac. Very flexible unit.

I just can not believe how great the Alpha Prime's sound, either in balanced mode or single-ended mode. These headphones sound so great and allow me to hear everything the music has. I heard stuff on Zappa's Guitar, that I have never noticed before. And the bass is spot on perfect, not to bloated or to light. I am very happy I went for the upgrade, and right now I am content with my selection of headphones. Thanks Dan for creating a work of audio art/ perfection, I am one happy, satisfied audiophile junky.

Hey Reddog,

Which do you prefer more ... the Prime on Lyr2 or Myolnir or Ragnarok (assuming you have some or all these amps).

Cheers!

I prefer my Prime's through my Ragnarok, in balanced mode. However I prefer my Prime's through my lyr2, in single-ended output than to to my Ragnarok single-end mode.

The Ragnarok has such utter control and power, in balanced mode, that the Alpha Prime's sing like a muse of fire. The bass is deep, detailed and impactful,. The mids are detailed, sweet and lush, almost that tube lushness. The highs are detailed , no Sibilance and thus the soundstage is wide and holographic,.

Hey Reddog,

Thanks for sharing your impressions. Ragnarok sounds awesome but too bad it's way out of my budget at the moment ... I can only eye the Lyr 2 or Mjolnir.

Met Dan in Singapore last week ... he did mentioned that the Lyr 2 with a good tube is as good sounding as the Mjolnir ... which made me wonder if I should tube roll to find the right sound instead of just buying the Mjolnir (and I'll have to invest in a balance cable for the Prime).

Cheers!

Your welcome Emerpus:
The lyr2 is a very nice amp, especially with a great tubes in it. I just wish it was a little easier to obtain good tubes. Thanks to head-fi, one can find out who the trustworthy eBay tube merchants. I hope you are happy with your mjolnir amp. Balanced output is nice indeed, but I was surprised how good the Prime's sounded, with the right tubes, in the lyr2. You are lucky to meet Dan, he seems like a very intelligent man, who is very kind towards people, empathy is a underrated train in modern society. Please be well, and I hope your rig always makes you happy.:)

Hi all, can anyone please compare NFB-15 (with txco) to Schiit Lyr2? I have Alpha Prime headphones that sound great with my NFB-15, but am considering chopping in my NFB-15 & Mad Dogs to get a decent amp. I could (I assume) use the dac on my Fiio X5 for a while.

Or- is there a better  (musical not "sterile" sounding) desktop solution for £400?

Anyone able to advise or point me in the best direction to post please?

Thx

Hey Reddog,

Just to let you know, I'm thoroughly delighted with my Cayin C5 for portable Alpha Prime listening. Using High Gain I can't listen past 4.5-5 on volume its pretty loud.  There is a lovely openness to the sound, and actually going back to my NFB-15 although the sound with a desktop amp is superior, I'm now finding that I prefer the slightly more sparkly sound that my Fiio X5-Cayin C5 combo has. So, I'm thinking of selling my 10 week old Mad Dogs and NFB-15, with a view to using the money to get a slightly warmer desktop setup. I feel maybe the nfb-15-alpha prime combo is a touch too dark. Whereas my aKG K550s just killed my ears after 10 mins even without any amping,

I can not take my APs on holiday with me using X5 & C5 its an awesome portable setup. Recommended.

Best rgds
