Hi everyone! I'm looking to buy a perfomance series 840/860. But there is not enough reviews and info on the web. In this thread i see people talking mainly about 880 and 840. im particulary interested in 860 model as i can get it at the same price as 840 (and 880 are not sold where i live) , but i hear they are very different sound-wise. My main concern is 840 being too bass-heavy and 860 being bass-less is this the case? I had a chance to try m50x and liked the sound, and would have bought them if only they were truly over-ear, but in my case they didnt fully cover my ears and worked as on-ears basicly, so comfort issues. Would 840/860 be a good alternative to m50x, for mostly on-the-go usage ( at home i prefer open phones. I like the sound of ultrasonic hfi 2200), or should i look in some other direction?

If you have large ears you might as well avoid these, the earpads are shallow and the outer ears touch the inside and get sore.

This is true (the depth issue) but I solved it on my 840 by taking a coax cable length and fed it under the pad on the inside - solved it and allowed me to keep this really good basshead headphone in use.

Is it just me or does the 880 sound a little congested, especially at higher volumes? Anyone have thoughts on this?

I sorta feel that way about my 840's(in comparison to my DT 770s), but I believe the ultrasones are pretty sensitive when it comes to ear placement within the ear cups. Could be because of how their "s-logic plus technology" works.

Try fiddlin' around with ear placement, might help alleviate some of that congestion.

What amps are you guys using? That can really make a difference with Ultrasones.

I'm using them out of an iPhone 6 Plus and an HTC One M9 (both proven capable audio performers), as well as out of a Fiio X1 + E11K portable rig.

These are portable headphones; if they need to be driven out of a large, powerful desktop amp to bring their full potential then that is definitely a very unfortunate shortcoming of the product.

For you guys who don't perceive congestion with the 880's:
Which amps are you using?

I would guess Project Sunrise would be a decent performer. Unfortunately, while I have experience with the HFI, PRO, and Signature lines, I haven't gotten the chance to hear the Performance series yet. All I know is that my Sig Pros can sound congested at times with a sub par source.

My dj one pros sound congested if the source does not have enough power. Until using fiio x5 I was unable to hear the amazing soundstage tey had to offer.

I'm running my 840's with a Cayin C5 - outstanding sound and a real thumper combo.  Best portable combo I've tried out of about 25 mix and matches over the past three years.
