Sony's New 2014 flagship IEM - XBA Z5

I remember the H3. To drive them from the Ak120 the amp is required otherwise you would get a mess if you add enough volume.
Do you really can listen to them directly from the Ak120?

Yup. They seem to work fine and volume levels are not a problem. I rarely listen any higher than the mid 50s ( on a volume scale of 1-70). I haven't tried them with a dedicated amp yet but will probably try that in the new year.

Without even the upgrade cable? Goodness gracious.

I know. I should be ashamed.

I auditioned the entire A series and Z series in our local sony store the other day. Brief impressions  -

A1 - Sounds really good for the price, and not all that far away from the bigger brothers. It is a massive improvement over the H1 with a more balanced sound with an overall performance that is close to my GR07. Sound signature is V shaped  and sounds quite clear. High frequency extension is a bit lacking but it is really smooth with no sibilance. Bass is strong with decent extension but it rumbles a bit less than the GR07. Compared to the GR07 it offers slighly better clarity and smoothness at the expense of  a more colored sound, but performance is on a similar level. Arguably this is one of the better values out of the entire series.

A2 - A big improvement over the H2, which it should be considering the H2 was dual driver while A2 is 3. I would say its on per with the H3 with a similar sound signature as well. Very strong bass, borderline bass heavy in fact, but the mids and highs are not really overshadowed. Separation is excellent and the overall balance is pretty natural and enjoyable. This reminded me a lot about my (now gone) H3. I like it more than my GR07.

A3 - I would take this over their previous flagship, the H3, any day. The overall balance is superb with the bass, the mids and the highs all presented equally. The upper mids sounds a lot more prominent compared to the H3 and more in line with the rest of the spectrum. The mid bass is also scaled back, allowing the mids to breath. Overall, it sounds a lot more natural and livelier compared to the H3, and sounds like whatever flaws they had with their previous flagship have been addressed here. Overall a solid earphone a good step up from something like a GR07.

Z5 - The new flagship. Compared to the A3, the Z5 sounds more fleshed out and there seems to be better separation between the lows, mids and the highs. It also sounds more open and a bit more refined. Instrument separation is really impressive, never sounding congested. Despite the strong bass, the mids are not recessed at all and has great clarity. It is a solid improvement over the H3, However, while the A3 is almost half the price, I would say the Z5 offers roughly about 15 ~ 20 % improvement.

Impressions were done using a Fiio X1 in a busy environment so please, take my impressions with a grain of salt.

Thanks a lot for the impressions, really helpful! I am leaning towards the A2 as theyre within my budget.

I just want to know if the bass is now more sub-bass focused instead of mid-bass? Or is it pretty much linear bass extension all the way?

Also being a vented iem, do you know if the A2 leak a lot of sound?

Thanks

As promised, here is a follow up to my initial review of the Z5s. I have not had time to compare them to my other IEMs or cans yet, but I'll try to get to that in the next few days.

I used my z5s on a 747 flight from Tokyo to Washington, DC and on a CRJ700 flight from DC to Raleigh, NC. While the Z5s do not provide as much sound isolation as IEMs with the best isolation, they are much better than the EX800s that I also own. Moreover, with the Comply TX200 tips, I find the Z5s sufficient that I can listen to rock and chamber music comfortably. I'm not sure whether they would work for full symphonic music with very wide dynamic range in a noisy environment, but for most other types of music, I would say they are fine.

Cheers

so if a past reviewer said XBA-A2 sound a lot like XBA-H3, then my H3 will improve with a walkman A10?

No, it will require an amp if you want to plug either H3 or A3 in. Directly from the A10 you will get a boombox - too much of boomy bass. Bass will be dominating.

With the A2 you do not need any additional amplification. A10 drives them just fine. Quite balanced sound with really good mids, highs and punchy bass.

The diffreence will be much much bigger if you try them (z5) out of the PHA-3 balanced output after 100 hours of burn-in, at least.

Thank you for the information, when i get my A10 (waiting and waiting and waiting for sony mexico to get the "mexican" (international) version of A17) i will fiddle with setting with my H3's hope i like how they sound (right now they sound slightly boomy and unatural if i compare them with MDR-1R, directly from a sony VAIO)

@qsk78, it seems your music preferences are quite similar to mine. May I ask how the Z5 are fairing with your favorite metal genres? And if I may be so bold, could you compare them to your A2?

Well, I mainly listen to doom/death, funeral, sympho/atmospheric black, prog/techno death.

A2 sounds very well with the A10, especially on genres like death. This is my on-the-go pair and I like it. They are brighter than Z5 in general, more accent on highs (but no hiss yet), very nice mids –guitars are really good on them, bass is also good and not boomy. I even tried to use a custom litz (cu) cable on them but went back to standard one since I got to much of hiss.

Z5+PHA-3 is great for atmospheric music with more instruments (more instruments is better:) like SSOGE), due to wider and deeper sound stage, better clarity and separation, especially from balanced output – so genres like funeral doom, death/doom, sympho/atmospheric black (Carach Angren are just perfect on them) sound the most interesting here. With the Z5 you don't want to move but sit and listen.

I got used to PCM DAC sound (where guitars sound more aggressively) on my previous DAP (fiio x5), PHA-3 on Sabre sounds differently, more analytically/audiophilistic (what would be a correct word?), but still very musically.
