Tidal Lossless Streaming

Can you provide some examples?  Are you in the US?

Yea I am (and as per the tidal website, once you have signed up you can be anywhere).

Re: example, I've encountered a few, but an example that immediately comes to mind is Hotel California, Google music HAS eagles, plenty of it, but no hotel california as far as I can tell (at least not any playable with AA). another possible example is "This is where I came in"  by Bee Gees, though it has mysteriously disappeared from tidal.com a day ago (it was there like 30 hours or so ago when I looked, but not this morning), though I am hoping the latter example is just a system issue on tidal that will get resolved, I don't see why a song as old as Bee Gees should suddenly dissapear from a streaming catalog.

A question for the others (with more experience with tidal) though: How often does this happen? Sometimes I find odd gaps in their list (all except 1 song of an artist, or one album) or things like the Bee Gees example above where it all of a sudden disappeared...have any of you experienced that? Especially the "dissapearing" thing, I understand gaps in the catalog, it's like movies/tv show streaming I think u need to have 2 services at least to get a good helping of everything you could want...but things suddenly not being there is a bit wierd.

It's not unusual for Tidal (and I would imagine other streaming services as well), where an artist catalog will come and go. A good example of this is Prince. After he passed I remember seeing his entire catalog on Tidal, but recently only select albums are available. Most of the catalog is still there but there are a few that were there before but not now...and his catalog is huge. My guess is that streaming services will have exclusivity for awhile and then it will shift to another service and so on.

Your example of The Eagles "Hotel California" on Tidal is a good one, however, Tidal does not have The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" album, which I've been waiting for them to get forever, it seems.

What I find unusual about Tidal is, I've seen a whole album, for a given artist, available for streaming except for one or more songs. The non streaming song(s) will be greyed out and can't be played.

Some artists are exclusive or holding out from streaming entirely or from specific regions, but most of the main stream classic rock and popular music from the 50's to present is available to stream on most of the music streaming services.  That is another reason I enjoy Google, in that I can upload my own music to make it available in the streaming app as if it were an integral part of the catalog.

The catalog for the Eagles appears to be similar between Google and Tidal.  I was able to play the entire Hotel California album without any issues.

I remember seeing a TiDAL lifetime offer (instead of monthly charges), is this still available?

my own 2 cents:
i'd be very cautious of parking my $$$ with any 'lifetime' offer with anyone, most esp with a music streaming company.

...Roon labs offers similar for $400 ish.

what happens if you change your mind down the road?...or esp given Tidal's
precarious position they get bought out by someone (apple etc) who may or may not honour such
agreements?

Tidal also seems to lose the most revenues of any major streaming service around
and also has the least members compared to apple or spotify...how long is this sustainable for?

sure  hope it sticks around...or some company that offers similarly good selection and quality streaming.

i mean i'm back to trying Tidal with Roon labs,  but who knows what will happen this
or next yr as the streaming wars get only more competitive.
i'm looking forward to trying Amarra when they come out with a windows 10 version shortly.

streaming and music software mgmt are such fluid industries at the moment.

hopefully in January or Feb we'll get better indicators of how the major streamers did in 2016, and what
they're attempting this yr to grab (and retain) more customers and to differentiate themselves.

Out of curiosity, has The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" ever been available on Google? I've never had that service.

Not that I am aware of, as it is most likely on a different label that has not negotiated terms to be streamed yet.  It is not available now.

I purchased the CD on Amazon for $7 (new), so I can upload it into Google.  Should be delivered on Monday.

OH yea the "upload into google" thing is REALLY nice with google. I never even noticed 'Hotel California' was not there on google because I actually have the song and google seems to have automagically uploaded it when I put it on my phone. Also, I see "Hotel California" album in your google screenshot...how? did you upload that? because I don't have that disc.

That's just sad to hear :frowning2:. I'm pretty sure people like apple streaming will not fail (idk about google, google is kinda like a 3 year old, suddenly you will find they have lost all interest in something they were doing), but I really don't understand why apple or google do not offer lossless streaming first of all. Again, I'm not sure how true  it is, but I'll be really sad to see tidal go, they have a really nice (if sometimes weirdly gappy) selection. Or even WHY the scene changes so much? Do artists really change music labels all the time or something? I mean, I gotta figure someone like apple or amazon has enough fame to just go to Sony, Warner, Universal et al and sign an agreement with them, why would it keep changing? (I'm not doubting that it does, just trying to understand WHY the scene is so fluid). MY Bee Gees example for instance, I know that Bee Gees got their songs back in 2006 or so and re-released it under a different label, until then it was owned by Universal who bought over the original label initially. But why would it suddenly change on the cusp of 2017?

We who like good audio are in the minority ...Just look at how many people stream Spotify for free (and don't care if it's inferior sounding vs paid).

It's clear what we need to do then is take over the world...in all seriousness though, I don't mind listening to spotify on a $20 headphones when I'm like walking around or at the gym. But I don't get how people don't want better quality, 128 is CRAP. The funny thing is though, anyone I've shown my (relatively newbish) setup and played some FLAC songs to, including collegues at work and relatives (all of whom are the "listen to music on youtube" crowd) LOVED it. Though, most of them said they may not pay $10/mth for that music listening experience..that's so odd.

Also for someone like Apple who have all the agreements in place anyway, I doubt it will cost MUCH to offer up lossless streaming for an extra cost (maybe some extra setup cost? I'm sure they have all the music anyways), they can charge double the price of a normal streaming and call it "HiFi streaming" like tidal, I don't imagine setting that up will be TOO much of a loss for apple and they just got a new (even if it is a low key one) revenue stream..why not?

I rip all of my CDs to Lame vbr -0 using dBPoweramp.  The track info always appears with "VBR" in parenthesis.

Here is the Google album of Hotel California, and you can see the 320 CBR mp3 that is used:
