NEW! Bose QC25 2014

They are a bit on the dull side with the ANC off...actually I forgot to add that...doing that now....thanks!

Pass mentioned that too. I was curious about how they sound with the NC off, but with external amplification, and how that compares to all the other configurations. If they are able to sound good with NC off by using an amp, I would be more open to buying them to replace the QC15 for portable use.

I just added my 2 cents on how they sound without the ANC. Not disappointing as say the Audio Technica ANC headphones, you could still enjoy yourself, but they are better with it on.

Would you be willing to hook up some of your portable amps to see how it sounds that way? I think that would be very helpful to those who are considering these headphones due to their ability to play music without having to use a AAA battery.

I have a A200p here, if I have some time this weekend, I will.

Having sound while NC is off is just a bonus I think. You mustn't use them without battery unless necessity (ie. you don't bring a spare battery for your trip). They just applied this concept too much with QC15.

Great mini-review BTW. I must be a little neophyte, because I don't ear any major difference in soundstage between QC25 and Momentum… as you gave a complete point more for QC25. Did you noticed a change after burning them? Does this even applied with an electronically controlled headphones?

I'm not a big believer in burn-in, but I did hear in improvement in imaging left-to-right and front-to-back. Not night and day, but still an improvement, plus it was a bit easier to pick out instruments in that soundstage too with the QC25s.

When you do a review, can you please see if they use any more volume of your iPod than the previous QC15s?  Bose took off the Hi/Lo switch which helped low-output devices like iPod run without too much battery power.  Bose couldn't give me answer, but I am afraid without the switch, they'll use more battery power in my iPod.  Thanks.

What is the sound quality when the ANC is off and QC25 is powered by a proper amp.  I am thinking how good QC25 can be for indoor use.

I won't (and I can't) do a fully descriptive and detailed review of QC25s being used alone vs. being amped, as I'm in no way a master reviewer. But, I'll try something...

It goes like this : iTunes playing Phil Collins' Dance into the light via a MBA > without and with an Audioquest Dragonfly (not the big rig, but it satisfies me enough) > Bose QC25 with NC off and on.

I choose this song because it has a lot of different instruments in it, and being it the most played in my library  It may not be the best tune for testing things out but, I like it anyway! And if I'm gonna be listening to it 4 times in a row, must it be one of my favorites! Finally, please note that volume setting for 1. and 2. was at 75% (12/16), and 3. and 4. was at 50% (8/16). Despite this, volume level with 3. and 4. was a little bit more powerful. I wanted to keep the effect of the DAC/amp, but not at the point that volume alone makes me think of a better sound.

1. Not amped, NC off : you already know. As @MacedonianHero, and I too, previously mentioned, it sounds dull. Lacks a little bit of everything : definition, omph, sparkle, etc. Not the big deal, but nothing to make you ill!

2. Not amped, NC on : you already know this, too. Sound is much more complete, way more exciting. It gets all, if not perfect, at least very good.

Now, what you've been waiting for!

3. Amped, NC off : first, it really does give it more power (see note above about volume setting), something the QC25s seems to like. Sound quality however… It gives it some kicks of life, is better than number 1. but nothing near of number 2. Bass is lacking, both in quantity and quality, and don't seems to go as low as with number 2. Not as detailed too. Voice is (a little bit less, but) still congested.

4. Amped, NC on : Honestly, not a big difference here compared to number 2. I noticed maybe the xylophone at 1:55 to stand out a little bit more. Overall definition tends to be slightly better.

Differences are more prominent between NC off and on, than it is between amped an unamped.
If I may classify the sound quality, for your convenience, it should go like this :
Amped, NC on : 9/10
Not amped, NC on : 8.5/10
Amped, NC off : 5.5
Not amped, NC  off : 4.5

So, I really think these headphones are meant to be used as a mobile set, with their own amp, since you don't gain that much with, at least, a Dragonfly.

As I don't have a "true" audiophile ear, nor a real big rig, I suggest you wait for @MacedonianHero results.

Very good to know! Thanks for testing this out.

Now I know the only reason I would upgrade my QC15 to the QC25 would be for situations that require noise cancelling. (Otherwise, I would use high fidelity headphones.)

  QC25 looks better, too

That's a bit more subjective, hehe. I prefer the more elegant aesthetics of the QC15.

Are the ear cushions the same? I ask because mine have been torn apart after 2+ years of use.

Do you know if the QC15 cable can be used with the QC25? I would like the option of using a normal audio cable instead of a remote cable. (From my experience, remote cables seriously damage the sound quality.)

Check this out from the Bose FAQ page.

Can I listen to music even if the battery has run out?

Yes. QC25 headphones are still able to play audio if the battery is depleted. Without power, however, noise cancelling and Active EQ, which electronically provides more lifelike audio reproduction, are disabled. These technologies need power to operate.

So it does do equalization in addition to the noise cancelling.

And here's the question everyone wants the answer to!

Are QC25 headphones waterproof?
No. They are not designed to be used in wet environments.

Can you compare the NC and SQ of the QC20i and QC25?
