I would say you get something like 45hrs instead of the 50. Not sure what charging to 100% would cause, but its still a nice thing to have.
If we ever do need too in a few years time, hopefully opening and installing a battery isn't too hard.

Why would you want to change songs while locked? Seems odd to me, at best your hand might as well be in the pocket, unlock and switch from there.
Tho this is from a guy who loves his CD's start to finish and never random, yuck.

This player is a little slim and flat to be used through even thin pants. But if you poke the right spot you'll get lucky and change the track.

I dont random but sometimes you are not in the mood for specific tracks and you want to skip them.
Unlocking in the pocket to switch is not ideal. I prefer a button which does it directly.

It's already there, its the Next song button.

I believe this was a design choice by Sony. Most DAPs have buttons that are risen above the body making them easier to press, but also easier to accidentally change songs in your pocket hence needing to make a Lock feature of sorts so this doesn't happen. Sony bypassed this need by making the buttons flush with the front so you can't press it by accident. This makes it useless for a lock feature.

The HOLD switch is more to keep the player from turning on when it is off since this player doesn't technically power off any press of any button will power it back on.

they all try to make something different for hold functions, but not one really gets it all. I do find the cowon way to work really well in a pocket(the volume buttons that can become track switch). or the other sony DAPs with buttons on the side, so you don't really have to worry about sitting on the DAP and simply don't lock anything(not that I recommend sitting on any DAP as it's a great way to kill a jack plug. the problem with cowon's UIs is usually more outside a pocket, when you look at the screen and wonder who the hell came up with the UI ^_^.
seriously cowon or sony they both do good stuff overall.

ATM I never locked my A15, I just didn't have to. but I guess that depends on what you do or how many stuff you have in your pocket.

The Japanese mindset is that "hold" should lock everything to prevent unintended input. Picture that iconic image of a rush-hour Tokyo subway train, and you'll probably see why? Whatever...can't trust people to think clearly these days.

I remember being so used to that philosophy, and feeling absurd when I noticed the Korean brands use the hold switch in different ways, and will in fact make the hold switch very easy to accidentally unlock (either very easy to press, or responds to a single press).

Also, I think Cowon often uses hold to cover up for the fact that they were* too stingy to put two extra buttons on their cheaper players like the i9+. Here's a question: does the hold switch still "switch functions" on higher-end Cowons like the J3, with their full complement of 5 hardware buttons?

*were, because now there's the D20 with all 5 buttons present.

I've ordered the Sony dap but I need a USB cable for my uD120 dac
I hope there is one!
This good head-fi.org site has opened my ears and wallet... Lol

I'm confused. you wish to plug the sony into the UD120? there's no certainty that it would actually work(even with the special sony cable to get digital out). but even if it works, there's a fairly good chance that the sony DAC sounds better than this.

what TJ linked is a cable for analog out, to plug into an amp.

Mine has just landed.  Will burn in couple of days prior to posting impressions.  Love the size & UI already.

Guys.....so the A17 doesn't support DSD/DXD?
