We should push Sony to make this either fully closed or fully open-back :D
I say leave the design to the Sony engineers.

yes....the engineers....not the marketing and financials.  I think the engineers would opt for a price is no limit high end if they could:)

it usually is almost limitless with a flagship... Almost. Unless its something like the HE-90 or the R10. Then it truly is a "Make me a contender for the best headphones in the world, and there is no budget limit." Type of situation. Lower end headphones... They probably give the engineers a production cost limit and an amount of time they have to come up with something within. Flagships, as far as I know, take years to design, like the HD800.

Sony has alot to compete against considering all these years of not successfully releasing a headgear worthy of remembrance.
XB1000 with its 70mm driver and big hitting bass? SA5000 with its detail and speed supposedly surpassing a lot of the flagship headphones? (according to reviews on here and other places.)?... Unless you mean post early 2012 when they stopped making decent stuff imo...

Worthy of remembering as in providing a high end headphone that is well respected and accepted throughout the headphone hobby for its pure sound quality. Not having heard the SA5000 I cannot comment on its sound (although I'm interested in hearing them myself), and even though some enjoy them, they are not liked and loved widespread by all - that was a while ago. The XB1000 are great at what they do, but I think the poster in question is talking about them putting out a truly high end headphone.

Its about a can having a lasting success and long-lived reverence. I really hope they can pull off a really good can that lasts for years and sounds fantastic.

The only recent Sony headphone worthy of praise is the Sony MA900 which was discontinued.

I would have said the EX-1000, it shows that clearly Sony did not produce a headphone that everyone would praise. We all can name the HD650, K701 but sony most infamous one that everyone said is what is arguably the king of dynamic IE Mis the R10. That was a long time ago. sennheiser after the success of its gears (the HD600, HD650) they came up with HD800 but sony really did not produce anything that could best the R10.

The thing with Sony headphones is that they do some stuff really well but have at least one massive flaw. The EX-1000 had a hell of a 7Khz peak and an uneven frequency response. The 7520/Z1000 have a huge dip from 3Khz-7Khz, massive distortion in the bass and poor power handling. The MRD-1R has awful boomy bass and poor power handling. The SA5000 has bass roll off.

When you are making a flagship you can't have a massive flaw like that.

Having been active in the flagship headphone thing in Japan during the end of the R10 era and Q010 introduction, I'd certainly be very interested in a new Sony flagship can.  I don't see it as replacing or being better than the 010 or the R10, but just different.  And hopefully remarkable sonically, just like its predecessors.

I don't know if I'd say the HD800 bests the HD6x0.  I think it's different, and I certainly like it better.  But I can imagine more than a few people who prefer their HD6x0.

The higher end Z1000, 7510 & 7520 are all fantastic sounding headphones. Even XB700 were really nice sounding.

Z1000 has poor power handling, huge bass roll-off and a huge notch taken out of the treble while also being sibilant. 7520 is the same but has a bit more bass.

They aren't terrible but they aren't exceptional either.
