I like the sound of the koss portapro It sounds great for portable use and even better with my reciever. Although, I'm not sure many people have used it for that purpose and the cord is rather short for home stereo use. I was wonder if someone could tell me of a headphone model that will give the the sound of the portapros in a full sized model?

Why not just get an extention cable w/1/4" adaptor?

buy an hd600, stuff the earcups with wool, and turn the bass & treble all the way up.

Or buy an SR60 and insert a duck with a lisp...

I am just asking a question. I thought the portapros where one of the few koss headphones that are well reguarded on this site?I simply wanted to know if there was a headphone that will have the sound of the portapro but in a full sized headphone.

try the Sony V6. It has nice deep bass like the Portas, but it is better balanced overall and better suited to handle receiver jack power levels. (My Sportas suffer terrible distortion when playing bass heavy music off of my receiver so I think the extension cord may not be the way to go.) The V6 is also durable, inexpensive ($55) attractive, and even portable in and of itself. It's also easier to find than a duck with a lisp!!!

I provided a possible solution BEFORE I made a joke, so I figured it was ok. Sorry if it was in bad taste. We kinda like to have fun here

tom,
i was hinting that in a full sized can you can do better than the portapro sound, which, when i owned a pair, i found bass-heavy and without detail. the v6 is a good choice for the money, and at a little higher price point the ety er-6 is a great choice (although it isn't much like the portapro sound).

If I ever get all of my tools and soldering equipment unpacked from our move I might have the answer for you. You see, I have this pair of Sennheiser HD545's with a blown transducer, and a pair of Koss KSC-55's whose headband broke the first day I had them (I was trying to make them comfortable....an impossible task for anyone with an average size head). With any luck and a little skill, I'll have a single sided cable on the HD545's with the famed Koss drivers in them.

The reason I like the Koss better than the Sony for everyday listening is because the Koss sound more balanced and musical. The V6/7506 have phenomenal bass, but their treble and midrange are not very good. Very analytical, but also cold and grainy.

If someone is looking for the PortaPro sound in a full-size headphone, a better option might be the Beyer DT250, which have similar characteristics to the Koss Porta/KSC line -- good bass, warm sound, musicality, good balance, and just a little of the detail taken off the top.

IMHO it is the SportaPros are not very well balanced. Bass is heavily emphasized at the expense of mids and trebles. KSC 35 might be a different tale, but compared to my Sportas, I think the V6 is much more even-handed. The Beyers are much nicer but cost close to 3 times as much as the V6s or Portapros so they should sound better!

If you want Porta Pro sound in a full sized headphone you are out of luck.

But Koss makes the over-sized UR-40s, which will sound similar

Tom: If you want a nice full-sized headphone that is not horribly more expensive and has similar characteristics, then the Grado SR60s would be great for you. Overall the sound is better to the Koss phones and can be driven well with your receiver. The one problem will be the 1/8" connector but if you have that solved already with your Koss phones, then you will be quite pleased with these Grados. Give them a test run if there is a local store that carries them. Maybe you will find that you prefer one of the higher models? I started off with the Grado SR60s as my first dedicated headphones, then I went straight to the top and bought the RS-1s and just yesterday picked up a pair of KSC-35s for walking to school (the grados although able to be driven with a portable, have this ENORMOUS cord in comparison and is a hassle for aerobic use).

Hi Tom!

I have auditioned the Koss R-90 (open) and R-80 (closed) full-sizers circumaurals and they sound just like more bigger Portas Pro-especially the open R90 version. I think they use similar drivers in bigger /and open/ earcup and have nice soft earpads that fit around Your ears.
Try them!!

just be forewarned that the R-80s (prob the 90s too) seem to be pathetically fragile. I dropped a pair on the floor in the showroom of J and R and both of the cups snapped off the mounting! From looking at other reviews on the net, people seem to have broken these easily by sitting on them, or even just adjusting them on their heads. This does not seem to be one of Koss's sturdier models! True it has a life time warranty, but do you really want to have to use it constantly and keep the phones out of service as they're shipped back and forth? I think you may just want to wait for the Koss UR40s and see what they're all about...
