Nice. Very different than the Dunu1000s. I put the same Comply 500 tips on, just to make sure it was a fair comparison. Less bass, for sure, in terms of "thump" (I had the Dunus set up with no spacers, so maximum bass). But the Altone's have very nice, strong bass, just very different. After about 10 minutes, as my ears acclimated, they sounded fine. More open on the bottom than the Dunus, less overall deep across the soundstage. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. It opened the sound up for the other frequencies, and the bass is certainly clear and "there." For a basehead probably not what they want, though. I also think that they need a bit more power than do the Dunus, as I found myself raising the volume a little bit from where I had it when I was using the Dunus on the same song just a few hours ago.
Mids and highs are very good, better than the Dunus, I think. Trebles are good, nice and clear. I've played a variety on tracks I've been listening to for more years than I care to admit, so I know what they should sound like. They all sounded quite good. On a couple of tracks some of the small sounds on the edges seems much stronger, more apparent. Acoustic guitars that had been buried in the mix on a Dave Mason track really jumped clear. Some fingering on the strings came right through, which was nice. I tried them on Friend of the Devil by the Grateful Dead in 24 bit, a really nice presentation, and the acoustics really shined.
The Altones seem "smoother" in their presentation. I've gone back and forth on the same songs, trying first one and then the other, and that's what seems to be happening.
I'll give these a good workout tomorrow on my walk, but for now I'm happy with them. I think as my ears get more used to them I'll continue to prefer them over the Dunus.
