Don Scorpio Dolphins

There has been quite a lot of discussion about dolphins in this thread http://www.head-fi.org/t/684159/chinese-asian-brand-info-thread-headphones-iems-amps-dacs/3075#post_10569603

I don't have the Dolphins but it seems those are well liked. I am planning on getting those and thought about starting a thread of their own here. General consensus seems to be that Dolphins are one of the best if not the best headphones around 100usd :)

Thanks, that's good enough for me.

I have also found it very hard to find reviews, and had poor luck crawling through that multi-hundred post thread linked above. I did manage to find a review here:     http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2657356    but I'm picking up a pair soon, so I'll post a review here in a few weeks.

I have the Dolphins. Got them recently from Penon Audio (one of the only sellers?). My intention was to use them for the gym for decent sound and for sound isolation. For that purpose, with a Sansa Clip it did the job. And with the Clip it sounds pretty good. With my LG G3 un-amped, on the other hand, it completely blows me away! So good I took it out of my gym back and it is now safely on my desk at home.

It includes a regular cable and mic cable for smart phone. I haven't tested the mic yet but will tonight. The cables are rubber coated, thin, not as nice as the V-Moda XS cable. The build quality is OK. A flaw that may be fatal for some is a creaky build. When help by the earpads and separated, it makes a creaking sound. I think it may be lessening but still not desirable. But when they are being used - not an issue at all. I thin the metal band used in the construction on the headband my have something to do with it. The shiny plastic is OK, I think scratch resistant. I would have preferred a matte surface, and black. The foam pads are comfortable. Large enough for big ears. The screen mesh covering the driver almost touches my ears.

So what blows me away is the sound. Easy to drive. Nice highs, rich mids that don't bleed and tight bass. Bass is more than adequate for my taste but definitely not basshead territory. The sound is warm and wonderful, and am satisfied with the purchase. They sound as good (better?) than my V-Moda XS (I know difficult to compare over ear to on ear)  but the Dolphins do have much better sound isolation as expected.

Any questions let me know!

Sounds Great! Mine should come in the mail within a few days, a week at the very most. I also bought from Penon Audio, 99USD flat.
Very excited. You say it sounded great with your phone, better than with clip+? Any trouble driving it? And have you done any burn in?

Yes. Better than the Clip+. With my phone they really shine. The Clip+ just barely drives it adequately. Also great on my Linux  PC - on board sound with good drivers. I didn't burn in but I could swear sound improved with use. By the way, from what I've read, burn in is much more pronounced on full size cans than on IEM's. I won't cite an article - this is from reading many.

I look forward to your impressions - before or after or during burn in.

Nice to see other linux users out there (I'm running ubuntu).  :D         Cans didn't come today, however I plan on waiting for a bit to post my opinions once they do in any case. I may toss up my first impressions here, but I intend to write a review for them, and I reckon I should take the time to really give them a shot first.

I've never specifically burned a pair in, as in just setting them to play music without listening to it just for the sake of it. I've never really noticed much difference between a new pair and that same pair after having used them for a while, but it may just be because the change is very gradual? How much of a difference are you hearing after this time? You mentioned they have improved.

I think the sound improved after a modest burn in. But I really can't be sure. I am certain that the sound is pretty amazing. I had them on for 2+ hours last night. I'm floored by how good they are - price issues aside. Also, they are comfortable.

I really love Linux. I use Mint (Mate) now on my primary PC but also Debian and Ubuntu in virtual machines that get lots of use. I love Linux because it does what I ask it to do, unlike Windows that goes out of it's way to make things "better" and only makes the user experience annoying.

I have a set of the Dolphins coming from aliexpress, they arrived in the UK 2 days ago so just waiting for our inept postal service to catch up with the Christmas rush....... Hopefully I'll post some impressions, but in the meantime has anybody heard of the mod that can be carried out on the earpieces? Apparently you remove the pad, and then remove a section of foam that covers the driver. I remember seeing an image somewhere that shows a bit of foam that half covers the driver diagonally, it may be stuck on, so the mod sounds permenant. Some have said that it opens the soundstage dramatically, and gives the phones more sparkle whilst retaining the good bass. It was noted that it could add some sibilance, but this was up for debate.
Might wait a bit after getting them to see if I think it's necessary, plus somebody said the whole process was a pain in the a@#e.

They came! They sound great! A bit too small :/ but the sound is fantastic. I'm gonna let the hype wear off a bit, listen to them for a few days or maybe a week, then I'll start posting.

The earcups are small? Really? The drivers are really close to the ears, so the ear cups are kind of sleek - don't stick out too far. I think this might be a problem for both smaller and larger ears.
Hype? I thought it was the opposite. I'm surprised when people notice the Dolphins!

I'm not a believer in burn in - especially for IEM's, but the Dolphin's sound better after a short burn in time. With an A-B test comparing to V-Moda XS (I know you really can't compare on ear to over ear) - the Dolphins sound better.

Why'd you order from Aliexpress? I've never seen a better price than what Penon offers. I assume they have an exclusive for some period of time. I look forward hearing your opinion - whatever it is - positive or negative.

I ordered from this seller -

$88.70, I think it must be one of the cheapest around. The wait is the killer though, been nearly 3 weeks, but they are in the UK at least ☺️
