Fiio X5 - Custom/Modded firmwares

Hi guys,

New X5 owner here (defected from iBasso camp, DX90 just died on me) and I need some help.

My X5 came with FW 2.0. I've checked all the functions, all is fine, but as many X5 owners I found the scrolling action of wheel and response on screen rather counter intuitive, better to say it does exactly opposite what I would expect.

I knew about this thread and within 15 minutes I had 2.0.7 beta with 90° rotated menu installed. Now, that's much more logical layout with wheel graphics on the bottom. It stays, please nobody move it to the left.

But still, I wasn't happy with the scrolling action. What I want is - lets say the default icon position is at center of screen, lets call it 12 o'clock. If I see Equalizer icon at 2 o'clock I want to scroll the wheel in clockwise direction to get to the Equalizer (as if trying to select it by moving cursor to select it) rather than scrolling wheel anticlockwise to get Equalizer to 12 o'clock position.

So I thought the reverse scrolling 2.0.7 version will do just that. Downloaded the file from the link on the first page - 90° rotated menu reversed scrolling), deleted previous X5.fw file from card, replaced it with downloaded one. Installed by holding Shortcuts button and Power Up. Screen showed "updating etc...". Manually re-scanned library as the player didn't see any music. Exactly the same process that I used to upgrade from 2.0.0 to 2.0.7.

But the bloody scrolling is the same!

What am I doing wrong? Is there any way to recognize 90° rotated menu reversed scrolling FW against non-reverse? I think when I checked the fw files were exactly the same size and of course the same name. Is the reverse scrolling the scrolling action as I described in Equalizer example?

Cheers.

they should go opposite in one of those.

here's  link to both of them, folders mark which is which.

i think you want the "opposite" one.

Thanks mate.

I don't have player with me, but I'll try both of them tonight after work and report back.

Cheers.

Also, while I'm here and have an expert online:

When scrolling songs in Play Now mode using wheel, again, when scrolling clockwise, the little red dot against the song name moves anticlockwise. When saw it first time I could believe my eyes. It is actually funny to watch

.

Just imagine scrolling the albums in folder view in the same manner - i.e. the album is in the middle of the screen so instead scrolling clockwise to get to it, you'd have to do exactly opposite. Now, that would be fun to live with.

Is the "opposite scrolling" addressing the song scrolling in Play Now mode as well, or is it a part of locked FiiO source code and cannot be hacked? I can live with this anomaly as I'm typically whole album in order listener.

Sadly that's part of the locked code.

What i did on the home screen is to swap the icons, but to swap the dynamic list, that would require a lot more coding.

It's rather funny that we both prefer the exact opposite scrolling directions. Are you right handed, and/or do you navigate the X5 with your right hand?

Thanks. I understand the locked code part and suspected that this would be the case.

Yep, I'm right hand scroller. Coming from a decade of using iRiver iHP-140 with its joystick navigation probably shows too where everything (including volume control) was done with right thumb. I admit I might be biased.

I'm in no way saying that FiiO got it wrong, it just does not suit my personal preference. The button mapping and scroll direction customization could be done in OEM firmware. Digital camera manufacturers routinely offer manual zoom or focus direction change on the lenses in camera body setting menu.

If that was the case I'd immediately re-map to swap functions of top left and right button.

Tried, works like a charm. The "opposite" version is indeed the one I was after.

Thanks again for putting all the effort to code all these changes. Much appreciated.

There is no 2.2 yet (is there?) as so far 2.07b is the most recent and the wonderful people creating these modified FWs are understandably choosing to wait for full release versions before updating.

I think they mean 2.02 beta.

Forgive my ignorance,i meant the 2.02 beta,i'm very sorry

That's OK!

It is possible to "borrow" the work of others and merge it with a beta software if you want to - just a matter of copying the the various .bin files from the beta over the top of the ones in the 2.0 version modded files. Otherwise you can wait until the next full release which I'd imagine can't be too far away. That release will no doubt spark another round of modifications and updates
