The DX90 by iBasso . . . Sound impressions . . . . . . . New Firmware, 2.5.1 . . .

At first I thought the new FW was more bass but then i compared it to the Hugo and it is about equal and I find the Chord Hugo a great benchmark. I am also picking up very subtle audience sounds. Very nicely done on this FW. Great transparency and sound in general. Playing my TH900 straight out of the DX90 is excellent. Even on some loud rock the sound stays open and dynamic.

Does it mean you prefer this new FW than the 2.0.5?

Yeah, IMO the new fw does not gives more bass, actually I can't even notice any sound changes compare to the 2.0.5 fw

The new firmware 2.1 to my ears sounds like most of the best traits of 2.00 and 2.05 have been melded together to make a great firmware! I'm loving it. Only thing I want is slightly more defined bass (not less bass, only more defined and tight) 2.1 bass seems slightly looser compared to 2.05, and so far 2.00 has my favorite bass. I'm a quality bass head!

Still can't feel any bass difference between 2.0.5 & 2.1.0 maybe my SE846 bass is too powerful

, but I found that transparency is better on the 2.1.0~

The new FW goes back towards the first FW. And I agree with some here, the bass isn't really changed. I thought there was more, maybe too much but that isn't the case IMO. Very natural layering and depth as well as width.

I tried the FW2.1 again with my Corda Classic and HPH-MT220. The FW 2.1 is definitely mid/vocal emphasized. You will hear more vocal details and mid bass. Likely it is the result of many local Chinese DX90 users requesting a "sweet/thick/forward" style of vocal presentation.

I go back to FW2.0.5 as I prefer a more balance/natural sound and don't want the sub bass being "eaten up" by the mid bass

When I listened to the 1st track "A Storm is Coming" of the "The Dark Knight Rises (Deluxe Edition) 2012", the difference between FW2.1 and FW2.0.5 was very obvious. While the FW2.1 will give more mid bass attack, the FW2.0.5 will give more sub bass rumble.

After a more accurate session at home with my beloved known tracks, I noticed a slight change in the signature as borrego say.

But for my well used ears it's note so easy at all to define the change, I just dont the have the capacity, as a long time musician I focalise always on music

This for say that for me is not a big change and sound quality is globally better, slight tuning and signature change, mids are a bit more clearer for me now, for bass I can't say to much, with the H3 they are so spacious with both firmware

I don't think iBasso has made the mid in FW2.1 sweeter/warmer, just more forward, may be a 2~3dB boost in mid. I also believe it is more like an EQ tuning rather than DSP change.

Jazz and unplugged vocal would sound additive with FW2.1. Movie OST would sound fantastic with FW2.0.5. It's all down to personal preference of music and presentation.

iBasso may as well just adding different EQ profiles in the next firmware release, and saves us from spending time doing the discerning work...

Yesterday I listen to the new FW2.1 the whole night with my se846.......Yes it's actually less bassy than previous FW, the drum sound thinner but the bass quality is still good

Mids have more transparency and details from the previous FW, vocal really shine on classical and jazz

High definitely improves a lot and I don't think the new FW2.1 is a warm sounding too

It looks like 2.1.0 really shines and show it's true color compared to previous FW at medium gain. My Roxanne improves a lot on med gain. Treble noticeably comes to life and details are more articulated. I can hear a much fuller and vivid and well balanced presentation.
The volume does not seem to go louder when quickly switching between low gain and medium gain without adjusting the volume level (205). Mids  sound at the same level switching to med gain. It just feel the treble and sub bass got lifted and the presentation just got balanced and improves detail articulation.
This is the best my Roxanne has sounded so far. I also have to balance the bass pot position using a DMM to make sure the resistance are closely equal on both channels. It appears there is a 10ohm difference when both pots are at the same position.

EDIT: copy paste error.
