I vote for the first rendering. Clean and sleek block design makes it's easier to put in the pocket and case friendly. Separate buttons for each function is not only durable but also prevent mis-fires. No sliders, volume rockers nor any gimmick control buttons please.
Please be careful about putting buttons on both sides of the device - it will make it hard to not accidentally press buttons on the opposite side of the player when trying to do things with one hand. A volume knob of some sort (perhaps like AK's) would remedy this.

I don't mean that it should look like an AK, James. My point is that if you have buttons on both sides of the device, a user may accidentally press a button on the opposite side of the device when holding it with one hand, especially while it is in a pocket. A volume knob may remedy this problem and I would think it could be designed so that it is easy to adjust with one hand while not copying the design of the AK. I don't know how the folks at Calyx would feel about the volume slider, though....hopefully they haven't filed a patent.
