That is true. I do remember the original Lyr sounding better but it didn't have stock tubes. I was told by a friend who has  both the Lyr and Lyr 2 to get different tubes as the Lyr 2's stock tubes pretty much suck and that after tube rolling the Lyr 2 sounds markedly better.

It's been my experience with apples-apples comparisons (same DAC, recordings, equiv. tubes) that all of the newer gen Schiit sounds better than the first generation.

nil < Modi

Asgard <<< Asgard 2
Lyr << Lyr 2
Vahalla <<< Vahalla 2
Gungnir < Gungnir Gen 2 USB
Bifrost << Uberfrost Gen 2 USB

Also with my Audio GD 11. 32 ( Sabre ES 9018 ) they sound fantastic ! . A sound that resembles a lot  to my Magnepan 1.7 speakers.

You are correct, I kept they isn't to think of stereo speakers that the 560's sound like, Maggie's all the way!!!

Huh.  My impression was also that they sound very much like Maggies.  In fact, these are the first planars I've heard that really give that planar sound and presence that I'm used to with speakers.

Miceblue sent me the 560's today so by Thursday I'll have them, the audition pair of the 400i's and my HE-6 to enjoy and compare. Rough weekend ahead.........

Anyone else using vintage iron? I'll be using nothing but and four different power levels and fed differently. Should be interesting.

Damn, who says the 560's can't rock, Zeppelin, Kings of Leon (OK not Rock, but serious bass), Jane's Addiction, P. Floyd, Audioslave, Godsmack, Smashing Pumpkins, and Stone Temple Pilots have rocked my world to tonight...IMO, one of the most versatile HP's available, haven't found a genre they don't do well!!!!

This is what makes Hifiman headphones so much fun. You can also use speaker amps on them with cautious handling.

Yesterday I connected my PC with Foobar to my Dac Nad MDC 2 (=> BEE C356).
I think the sound is a little better than the Squeezebox Duet / optical => Nad MDC 2.
But above all (like some others here) I strongly prefer the HE-560 by lowering 4 khz region (and maybe increasing 2 kHz).
So I'll buy a used little netbook that will serve me just to listen to music with headphones on my Nad. And it will be perfect...
[Edit - I took one for $100 on ebay]

(Because in the end I prefer Focus pads than the Focus-A : much refinement, clarity and imaging to my ears ... while hating the peak at 4 khz.)

I chose this type metal for grill mod, because if you look closely, there is no reflective "flat surface" on it,
As opposed to usual grills. .. Which means less surface reflection...
The only issue is the thickness is a tiny bit thicker so I had to file the edges. .
:)
Soundstage and body and instrument separation are increased. .

I prefer a felt covering not just for dust and pet pet hair,
But the treble air gets a "wetness" to it :)
"Organza" white felt was used...

After doing this and removal of felt cover of driver side of FocusA pads.

I finally hear that immediacy and realism & increased clarity that the HE6 had.
It was a grill & fuzzer modded HE6 on speaker taps so it was optimally set up. .

Anyway now finally happy with my he560:

Very handsome, I really like the wider looking "thick" grill you did.  Makes me want to do it on my he-500, but there's probably no reason to!
