Hi Everyone,

The response to the Official Metro Detroit Head-Fi Meet and Get-Together has been great! I’m happy to say that I’m able to post he first preliminary attendant last as well as anticipated gear list here.

IMPORTANT: While there is some world-class headphones, amps and DACS coming, it is imperitive to provide a source as well as power strips for your gear. Remember, your headphones without a source is just a really expensive paperweight!

September 20, 2014
11AM - 4PM

Cost:

Free

Location:

Great Lakes Pump & Supply Company
Conference Room

Facility Details:

Thanks to Audio Guy for providing the space for the meet. Public WiFi will be available for the day. We need to make sure that we treat the facility as well as everyone’s equipment as if it were our own.

THERE IS NO SOURCE BEING PROVIDED BY THE FACILITY. You will need to provide a source for your gear in order for it to be heard. You will also need to provide an electrical strip as well for your gear.

You will be required to wear your name badge lanyard the entire day. NO ONE will be allowed into the room without this credential. Each individual will also be provided a name tent to place next to their set-up as well.

After Party:

For those interested, we are going to go out for dinner after the meet. We plan on going to:

Ashoka Indian Cuisine
3642 Rochester Rd
Troy, MI 48083

Other Event Notes:

There will not be any amplification or sources available as part of the facility. Therefore, it is encouraged that you bring amplification and sources if you have them to maximize the experience for everyone. Audio Guy will attempt to make available a public wi-fi connection for attendants.

The preliminary rules are:

1. I'll contact the pre-registered attendees to get the Name, Address, Email, Contact number the week before the Meet, and will respond with the venue details.

2. At the meet, you would be required to provide a valid photo id when registering at the registration table. Your valid photo id will be cross checked with the details provided prior to the meet.

3. You should bring an extension cord or power strip if you can (along with other cables necessary for your setup)

. Don't forget to bring your source as well as amplification.

4. Please be careful and respect other members properties, ask before you pull a phone out of a plug – some amps if they are not powered down before inserting or pulling out a jack have the potential to blow. Again be very careful.

5. Be on the watch out for power cords and headphone cable on the floor and tables, you can easily knock over equipment, or hurt yourself – if this is your first meet be weary the floor will be littered with cable.

6. Please restrict consumption of food or drinks to the designated place ONLY and place all trash in the plastic bags provided. PLEASE also wash your hands if it is dirty before touching anything.

7. No wet hair, or put anything in their hair at all (e.g. wax, gel, mousse etc) (Will be refused entry). Strong aftershave or deodorants are also not good. Also, clean in and around your ears. Nobody wants their cans covered with earwax.

8. No need to panic or spoil the mood (it's unlikely I'll run off with your $10k amp) - but leaving keys, wallets or expensive IEMs unattended might not be a good idea

9. You must wear the name tag at all times.

Finally:

Space is becoming limited so if you have interest and have not yet PM’ed me, do so soon.

Look forward to seeing everyone there!

Honestly this has been going on for so long that I think it's a better idea to make it a small house party, get people on an invite list that can actually bring gear, and schedule it. Whoever can make it, will. Whoever can't can't. Put a cutoff date on the poll at least.

Thanks for the input. Frankly, I was planning on making it a small event, probably at my house. If, for some reason, it looks like we can get a sizable turnout, then look at an outside venue. I have a feeling it will be small but I suppose you never know.

The poll has a two week cut off, Mar. 29.

June 15th is fathers day...that's going to mean a lot of us can't be there.

Mar 15, 2014 at 6:41 PM Post #5 of 131
So bring your father's or don't show up. This is exactly what I was talking about. You cant please everyone, just set a date and see who shows up.

With due respect, holding a head-fi meet on father's day ENSURES that a fair number of people simply won't show up.  Now if you're OK with that, more power to you...but it strikes me as a bad idea.

Then again, why not wait and schedule it on Christmas Day, or Thanksgiving?  I mean, you can't please everyone...just set a date and see who shows up.

I can tell you right now that I won't be able to make it, and I'd bring a lot of gear in tow.  I can pretty much guarantee that some other local fathers who might otherwise consider showing up with a WHOLE lot more gear than me in tow (HINT HINT) won't be able to make it.

It's a bad date....I'd change it to something else were I you.

Theres a monthly meetup for SMAC (southeast michigan audio club). their home boards are audiokarma, if you're interested.

They simply have 1 volunteer set a date for the month and they have the meet at his place. at that point, everyone can either bring their own equipment or enjoy just what he has. its a basic barbeque setup, though they let people know what kind of equipment they'll be listening to and what songs they'll demo on the equipment. Generally its just like 2-3 sets of speakers.

I figure this is how this meetup should go. set the location at your house, set a date by yourself, let people know what equipment you have. Then, whoever wants to can bring their own. This is a headphone oriented forum, after all, so its not like there will be space constraints.

I have BW685 speakers and a klipsch rw12d subwoofer, powered from a marantz SR6007 receiver. I also have HD650's, an O2 and a magni/modi stack. Depending on what other people have, i can bring this stuff.

In any case, thats the entire reason theres a poll. Cast your vote and we'll see what happens. I know theres a high chance i wont even be living in michigan in july.

For a location, we can meet in our company conference room. It can handle 20 people. It is in an industrial park in Troy near Rochester Rd and I-75. Parking is not a problem. However, I would not want to do anything sooner than mid May. Whatever equipment is required, we'd need to bring in.

I can bring in Decware Taboo and CSP2, Audeze LCD2 Rev 2.1, Beyerdynamic T1, AKG Q701, DT990-250, HD600, HD555, etc.

I am a SMAC member.. they are fortunate to have a coordinator and he solicits volunteers to host. The host sets the date. It is a good model.

Regarding Fathers' day, I agree, it is a bad day. Saturday meets are usually best for most...

Agree. Apparently, my calendar is not Hallmark-compliant. I'm a father so I should know better...

That would be great. Thanks for volunteering your site. That seemed to be the biggest hurdle in planning a get-together. It appears that the August 17 date is shaping up to be the one. I say we make it official and get it scheduled for August.

I can bring HD650s, HE-500s, Asgard 2 and Bifrost Uber and have no issue coordinating the event.

Audio Guy, I'll PM you later this week about the specifics of the site.

Should be great!

Mar 18, 2014 at 4:37 PM Post #11 of 131
I'd be interested in showing up, but that August date doesn't work for me. It's GenCon weekend. (I have too many hobbies, all of them expensive.)

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can make it next time. The more the better.

Question for the group...should I start a new official thread for the event or should I amend this one now that we have a date? I just want to do the right thing.

Thanks!

We had a pretty firm date and location but because of a conflict, we are working on a Saturday in September. The location will be in the Troy/Rochester area. I'll post once we finalize the date.
